Show I I BOX ELDER 7 Brigham City, Utah Sunday, February 27, 1977 NEWS, First in series Agent advises: Make most of water we have by Harold G. Lindsay, USU Extension Agent, Box Elder County GAINING A near fall in this opening-rounaction is Box Elder's Kevin Nelson. Despite inspired effort by Nelson and other Bees, the local team was well back in the pack in eighth place going into Saturday's final consolation and championship rounds. This issue of the News went to press too early to report the final standings. d This is the first of a series of weekly articles that will contain ideas and suggestions on how to make the best use of the water we have for irrigation purposes. By now we have all been told that our area is experiencing a drouth. The northern mountains of the state have about 15 percent of normal precipitation for this time of year. The accumulation for the week ending Feb. 10, 1977 was 1.31 inches or 7.25 below normal. In 1933-3- 4 the same area received 4.06 inches of moisture. At present time we are far below the 1933-3- 4 moisture level. Early planting of irrigated spring grain crops is much better than late planting. Utah crop specialists have indicated that on the average for each day of delay in planting after May 1, farmers can expect a loss in yield of one bushel per day per acre. In planning yuur home gardens, you may find it best to plant those vegetables which will give you the most in return for the least space. Tomatoes and carrots will give you much more food than will sweet corn. This is a year we should expect all sorts of products for sale of questionable value. I want to say that there are no water substitutes or water stretchers. There are no magic products to increase water storage in the soil or reduce water needs of crops. The addition of decomposed organic matter to the soil is the only material I know of that is practical to add to the soil to increase the water holding capacity of the soil. Next week I will discuss the use of fertilizers in a drouth year. wrestler Jay Anderson listens intently as he receives instructions from Coach Ron Wolff during state tournament match. Of course, there are going to be occasions when you will have to resort to directory assistance For example, when you need newly-listenumbers that aren t yet in the directory That s why we don t begin to charge for these calls until you ve made five of them in any billing period However, there are certain things you can do to avoid being charged lor directory assistance and we d like to share them with you. Most ol the numbers you re looking for can be found in either the white pages or the yellow pages It s just a matter of keeping these directories handy Write down in a personal directory the telephone numbers of people you call frequently, or numbers that you've obtained through directory assistance There are some exceptions to this new charge For example, blind and other handicapped people who can t use the directory should call our business office to find out how to become exempt People who call from pay phones, hospitals, hotels and motels will not be charged And. long distance directory assistance outside of Utah will not be affected We developed this charge because it was the only way we could handle the rising costs of directory assistance fairly Now the peoole who use directory assistance the most will pay lor it And the people who use their directories the most won t Our directory assistance number. Be careful how you spend it. Mountain Bell , |
