Show ELDER BOX NEWS, Brigham City, Utah Fall Sunday, October 10, 1976 to Bonneville, 14-- 0 Bees look to Royals laker defeat setter Box Elder jumps from the proverbial frying pan into the fire next Friday afternoon wjien the Bees travel to Roy where the Region Royals just seem to get tougher and tougher. The Hive guys were in the frying pan this past Wednesday night when they hosted Bonneville in a homecoming grid go at Ferguson field. And they got burned to the tune of 0 at the Laker hands. It was a good defensive duel with stout performances on both sides. But the Box Elder offense was so ineffectual that it was the defense playing overtime. The result was Bonneville touchdowns in the second and third periods. The local lads never got closer than the enemy again for an Oct. 21 regular season finale at Sky View. Early Mistakes Wednesdays ball game saw both clubs hobble themselves with early mistakes. The Lakers drove to the BE-1- 6 only to have a holding penalty foil the thrust. And moments later, a fumble near midfield spoiled the makings of a sustained march by the Bees. Kevin Hurley set the Lakers up for their first score when he returned a punt to the BE-2From there junior running back Jerry Amidan took over and five plays later skirted right end to score. George Archuleta booted the first of two extra points to give his mates a 0 lead. Early in the third period, Box Elders Brett Ferguson gave the Bees new life when he scooped up . a fumble at the BE-4But three plays later, Dan Rich got it right back with an interception at the Bonneville 41. Four plays later, quarterback Gary Tracy hit Mike Mathieu on a scoring strike and One-leadi- 14-- line. The outcome a ended five-gam- in e winning streak for Coach HEADING INTO TRAFFIC with the football is Box Elder's Brett Ferguson as Jeff Hardy (54) and another Bee attempt to clear the way. The Lakers won the Region One duel, 14-0- . suddenly it was 14-After the ensuing kickoff, Box Elder drove from its own 29 to the Bonneville 32 before giving up the ball on downs. The Hive offense offered little after that, although the defense continued to hang hard against a bruising Laker ground game. Unofficial stats had the Bees gaining a total of 77 yards in the game and completing just two of eight passes while losing the ball twice on interceptions. The Box Elder offense Its 1 JOX ELDER ACTION SPORTS has not been a dominating factor in Box Elders success this year. An inability to sustained drives has hurt them and accounted for low scores and narrow winning margins in previous outings. But no one watching Wednesdays grid fracas could accuse them of not hitting hard. It was a encounter, if not a winning one for the local lads. Now the task at hand is planning an ambush for the g Royals. Bear River pushed Sky View around, outgained them on the ground and in the air, yet 5 decision last dropped a Wednesday night and sets the game stage for a Friday at Spanish Fork. The Bears had several sterling scoring tries and one, by consensus of sideline spectators, fans, players and even the Bobcats, had the Bears score, but the third and inches try was . ruled short. fcBear ftiver had some great individual performances. Nolan Hess and Howard Rawlinson baffled the Bobcat secondary with pass receptions, Chris Webb was a demon at middle linebacker, Curtis Kidman rambled over and through for 145 yards on the ground, John Hurley, back from a knee injury had a good game at tackle as did Lupe Barrera . . . The list could go on, but there Isnt much solace in playing a good game yet finding the score heavy for the wrong team. 21-1- Only Show Sky Views only real show of passing offense brought a touchdown early in the second period non-leag- , when Richard Spuhler threw 15 yards to Dale Hansen. Now - Roy, of course, appears to be a shoo-in- . 0 and with games remaining with Box Elder and Weber, the Royals should do no worse than 1 the rest of the season. Which brings up the interesting question: Wholl be number two to meet Region Threes third placp team for a quarterfinal shot? Box Elder and Bonneville are tied at 1 each thanks to the Laker win over the Bees Wednesday. Sky View is 2 and still in the running after edging Bear River Weber is the only team really out of it. Friday, Sky View is at Weber, Box Elder at Roy and Bonneville at Logan. The Bobcats are not all that good, relying mainly on a lot of fresh bodies to wear down the opponents. Their verr type of offense is rugged and passing fair, but a good rush and some tough linebackers can stop that, as the Bears showed. And the SV defense is quite suspect, particularly to the forward pass. The Grizzlies That leaves, if the record runs to form, the Lakers at 1 and Bobcats and Bees Royals at tied at 2 with a week to go. The final week then would pit the Bees at Sky View in a gotta-get-game for both, Weber at River and at Bonneville. The Bees Bear Roy would rely on a Bear River upset of the Lakers and their own efforts over the Bobcats to make the playoffs. A Weber win over Roy, however remote, would not affect standings. Unless the Bee line shows more strength in the rush than in the past, Box Elder will need to do a bunch of passing and that puts pressure on junior Kline Adams. The Cats showed last week that they are susceptible to the pass giving up two TDs by air and several yards. 4-- 734-978- 3 1 ANYTIME. Bonneville might be breating easier at this end of the season and usually the Bears have provided room for an extra sigh. This year isnt one of them. The Bears are scrappier, better prepared and executing better on offense and any Laker letdown might be cashed in on to their dislike. This might be the biggest Bee hope to playoff, an afternoon upset in Washington Terrace. Looking at Bear hopes in areas, Payson, 0 loser to the Bears in the opener, has been kicking the socks off Region Six clubs which are about on par with tough Region Five clubs. The roulette wheel standings in Region Five could give the Bears a shot at Davis, Bingham or Murray for a playoff berth. Murray lost to Sky View 6 by way of small comparison. Research by the outdoor recreation department at Mercury outboards shows that food processing technology has made great strides in recent years. In fact, now it is possible to prepare a complete dinner at a remote lakeshore site, using only one pan for cooking and never getting that pan dirty!
