Show . - , From board oh t 3-- 2 Bear River City students win option From now on, seventh grade students from Bear River City will have the option of choosing their school. They may go south to Box Elder Junior High in Brigham City, or north to Bear River Junior High school at Garland. The option was guaranteed them by action of the Box Elder Board of Education Wednesday night. But the decision did not come easy. It was preceded by an hour-lon- g discussion in which several Bear River City mothers took part. Further, the vote was not unanimous. Board President Kenneth Porritt, a Bear River City resident, was joined by Deloris Stokes and Wallace Christensen to pass the motion. Arnold Thompson and Winston Benson stood against it. An earlier motion by Thompson to deny the option was defeated by the same Brigham City, Utah Sunday, June 8, 1975 BOX EIDER NEWS, vote 2 margin. Have Gone to Box Elder Students from the rural community for years have been directed to Box Elder Junior High, with some individual exceptions. Now, when entering seventh grade, they may elect to attend Bear River Junior High. As part of the boards decision, the students choice must be indicated least for these students to change. "If youve got a problem, its much bigger than this fall," Dr. Haws told the board. He then cited the need to respect boundary lines, mentioning the numerous requests that come in each year for children to attend school not in their attendance area. And are turned by Feb. 1 of each year. And once made, the decision locks the student in for his or her entire secondary school career. In addition, the board stipulated that no bus route changes or additional runs will including those for activities be allowed. Students who choose to go north will be served by existing bus transportation in the area. This was specified to recognize a current board push to make transportation in the district pay its own way. Indications were that 11 students will take advantage of this first year's opportunity to attend Bear River Junior High. The list reportedly wont be finalized until Monday. Request for the option was made at the boards meeting a week earlier by Mrs. Bette C. Dallin, PTA president. She cited survey figures which indicated a number of Bear River City parents wanted a choice. . Brigham City but who must attend Foothill school 10 blocks away. ' "I hope this doesnt rub off anywhere else but is confined to Bear River City. Thats my biggest concern, Dr. Haws declared. He also advised the board not to be naive enough to say youre going to keep bus runs the same (for the Bear River City students) because you can't. Treat Students Same The superintendent said all students must be treated the same. If an activity Consulted With Schools During the ensuing week, Superintendent J. C.
