While on the subject, how about the finding by the British government in a recent study that brushing has no effect in curbing decay in childrens teeth? Thats right, Mom. Some 13,000 youngsters reportedly were observed; part brushed three times daily, the others once or less. The end result? No difference in the rate of decay. A bit of nostalgia Editor: Just the other day, and quite by accident, I happened to note among some of the memorabilia from my college days a yellowed sheet of paper which apparently had been an instruction sheet concerning Part I of a final exam in freshman composition asking us to compose an essay on liberty" as interpreted in the era of our American Revolution by the generation living at the very time when the constitution and the bill of rights were born. The young instructor had kindly furnished to us-a- s an aid in following genuine gems of writing our essay on liberty-th- e post-177- 6 Americana: 1) the text of the original version of the pledge of allegiance to the U.S. flag authored by Francis Bellamy in 1790: It is the common fate of the indolent to see their rights become a prey of the active. The condition upon which God has given liberty to man is eternal vigilance; which condition if he break, servitude is at once the consequence of his crime and the punishment of his guilt. As I gather from my own notes on that sheet, the instructor wanted us to use a bit of empathy and structure a spiffy essay around these two famous bits of Americana. The only reason why. I think today that I kept this finai exam instruction sheet is that I did indeed write a fine essay on liberty at that time and thus wanted to keep this as a memento, also perhpas somewhat influenced by the importance of the Curran quotation since it obviously is the source of the very famous quotation (or eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. And so, hopefully, I submit this delightful bit of historic and personal nostalgia for the enjoyment, pure and simple, of your readers, as a rare contribution of mine in the lighter vein. Note: You might enjoy comparing the present version of the pledge of allegiance with the above original version and note the one major alteration and the one major addition, as found in the present version. time-yellow- Sincerely yours, Adolph Kaltwasser, Brigham City Give the world a little gift today.
