More initial payments will be sent out as the harvest progresses. At completion of harvest, the total initial payment is expected to reach $70,000,000. The initial payment for 1974 sugarbeets follows rather closely on the $23,550,000 final payment for the 1973 crop which was paid about a month ago. Besides the initial payment, growers participate in the net returns from the sale of sugar made from their beets during the entire year following harvest. The high prices received for sugar during the past several months are reflected directly in payments to the growers. under con- The total tonnage of sugar-beet- s from this years harvest is expected to be 30 percent less than was received by the sugar company last year. "However, rising sugar prices have changed the picture dramatically. Farmers who grew sugarbeets in 1973 have reaped the benefits of the increased sugar prices because of the participating contract, and those who decided to grow beets again this year are receiving the highest initial payment on record, almost as much as the total amount paid for the 1973 crop. With the incentive of higher prices it now appears that sugarbeet acreage should return to normal next year. time, because world sugar supplies were already short. The United States now must import about half its sugar needs at the unprecedented prices caused by high world demand.
