New Forage Fish at Willard Bay and walleyes Hungry largemouth bass will soon find a new item on the menu in Willard Bay. Division of Wildlife Resources Assistant Fisheries Chief Bill Tate said fathead minnows will be stocked in the reservoir within the next two weeks to 'supplement present forage fish. The bass and walleyes were stocked in the bay after the reservoir was built. Utah chubs served as the original food supply, along with green sun-fis- The heavy predation greatly reduced chub numbers, and sunfish populations are not sufficient to support the larger fish. Walleyes were in poor condition previous to last year, the majority reaching one to 1 pounds. Bluegills, introduced when Pineview Reservoir was drained, and crappie, from overflow waters, reproduced in great numbers. Walleyes doubled in weight, maily due to the crappies. But crappie reproduction is cyclic, that is, they do not have the same number of eggs each year. This makes them unreliable as a said Tate. forage support, Spawning habitat for bluegills is limited in the bay, limiting their numbers. The fathead minnow was selected as the new forage base because it is small and can serve as part of the walleye-bas- s diet as an adult. It spawns intermittently through the year as long as water is 65 or more degrees, so will provide food for young game fish throughout the summer.
