Sound strange? It isnt. Lt. Ernest Justesen announced that Don Lewis Olsen, 544 South Sixth West, the owner of Brigham Floral and Gift, gained this months noteworthy courteous driver citation, for his actions. Olsen just came out of a store at 80 South Main one afternoon, started his delivery van, and noticed the dog in the street. Almost Got Hit The animal darn near got hit by three cars, said Olsen. The local florist got out of the truck and tried chasing the animal off the road. He finally caught it at the First South and Main intersection. The dog wouldnt get out of the road," Olsen explained. Lt. Justesen was on his way to an accident at the south end to town when he noticed Olsen in the street directing traffic for the dog. Cars were stopped all over, the police detective said. Olsen didnt stop there. He took the animal to the police station to make sure it wouldnt get out in the road again. Returned to Owner The dog was given to the poundmaster and later returned to its owner. Lt. Justesen said he had been looking for a courteous driver for 15 days, when he came across Olsen on June 5 at about 3:15 p.m. The courteous driver citation is being sponsored by the Brigham City Business and Professional Womens club in cooperation with the police department. Second Citation This is the second one to be given. Three more will be issued in the following months. Olsen has been owner of Brigham Floral and Gift for the past year. He has been associated with the firm for about 15 years. Prior to that he was a semi truck driver for the same number of years. Approves reservoir use budget, sets hearing long-rang- Adjusted Budget In other business Thursday, the council authorized a resolution providing for adjustment of the current budget, a usual procedure. Also, the city fathers agreed to call for and open sealed quotations this coming Thursday for a $136,000 tax anticipation loan. The city will pay off an existing note with Box Elder County bank for the same amount on July 6. The council set June 21 for discussion of a citizens wage and salary committee report. Proposed is an employe handbook that would serve as a ready reference for the employes and an aid to supervision in maintaining consistency of treatment on swimming action pool highlighted Thursdays city council meeting. A. E. Mansour, roadway design division chief for the Utah Highway department, made it official a rest area and travel information center will be constructed on Interstate-1- 5 northwest of the city airport. The vacility, one of two planned for the area, will serve southbound traffic. Mansours purpose in writing the council was to request a waterline connection with the airport. The estimated summer usage during the design year 1993 is 7,800 gallons per day for rest room facilities and a like amount for landscape irrigation for a total of 15,600 gallons per day, the highway aide explained. Must Check Agreement Before reaching a decision, the city officials said theyd have to check into an agreement with the Federal Aviation agency and also to obtain engineering data skiing tournaments provided it meets with approval of the Mantua Town board. The tournaments, sopnsored by the Utah Boar and Ski club. The reservoir was also made available for a professional water ski show on June g event for the 30, planned as a Mantua LDS ward. Stewart Reeves, a member of the bishopric, made the request. The council agreed to make a city ambulance available if the ward wants it. Brigham City will supply pipe to rectify a flooding problem at Seventh South and First West and ask owners of a nearby multi-unapartment building to install the pipe. The problem was created when curb and gutter was installed which bisected an existing irrigation ditch, installation being done according to city specifications. An allocation of $73 was approved to help Aubry Moody, district coordinator, attend a Western Boys Baseball association meeting in Las Vegas, June fund-raisin- it 16-1- on a pipe line connection. The reference to FAA is necessary since the federal agency provided financial assistance when the airport water line was installed. The rest stop area is one originally planned for Elwood; however, that intent was abandoned because water was not available. Mayor Ole Zundel said a similar facility is designed west of Perry on for northbound traffic. Hear Petition petition bearing 16 signatures was read to the council. It complained of old cars, parts and other materials being hauled onto a residential lot at Seventh North and Second East, and also that the house, burned in a fire 18 months ago, is being rebuilt when it should have been torn A down. The petitioners referred to it as an eyesore. The owner, Bennie Kay, was on hand to defend his use of the property and efforts to rebuild the home. Kay said he has previously rebuilt two s Dairy Princess pieces of property in town which are now being rented. Materials hauled to the property include old lumber recovered from four lots around the city which was removed for beautification. As for the cars, rebuilding them is his hobby. Kay explained, adding that he should be entitled to pursue his hobby. Has Permit City Building Inspector Bill Romer said Kay had taken out a permit to rebuild the home. However, he said having old cars on the lot in an R-- 2 zone was definitely in violation of the zoning ordinance. Kay who indicated he has six cars now and plans to remove two of them suggested that he be permitted to build a high fence to let me enjoy my hobby". Mayor Ole Zundel, noting this is only the second petition Ive seen like this in years, said the city attorney should be consulted to see if we are complying with the ordinance. ..we must comply with the ordinance. The American flag, symbol of the Elks lodge, will be honored in a special ceremony June 14, Flag Day, at the flag staff in Rees evolution of the flags design. Mayor Olof E. Zundel will address those assembled on a theme of patriotism. Members of the lodge will speak on what the flag means to the various chairs of the Elks as a symbol of justice, brotherly love and charity. Participating in the ceremony will be the officers of the lodge along with Kenneth Northness and Thomas Walker.
