Show t 2 BOX ELDER NEWS, Brigham City, Utah Letters to the Editor... Sunday, October 22, 1972 Editorially Speaking Thanks for Paper UN Beset By Failure But Should I would like to express my profound thanks to all of you at the Box Elder Journal for the wonderful paper you have sent to me while I have been on my mission. It has truely been a joy to serve the Lord in the wonderful land of Japan. The work has gone We Withdraw? are several letters on editorial page which classify todays the United Nations as something less than successful. The world organization is indicted for not keeping the peace, for promoting the communist interests, for kicking out Nationalist China in faver of the mainland Reds and for creating a disproportionately heavy financial burden on the United members openly defy the U.S. out of spite and not reason. Yet, as weve stated previously, the world organization provides a forum for airing differences. And if it serves as a safety valve for releasing tensions that might States. with comits munism, aims, principles or lack of respect for individual dignity and free expression. There forth with tremendous strides and being so busy has not let us think too much about back home. The paper has been a real delight to receive and one of the closest things to home, besides a otherwise explode in open conflict, then theres value to be gleaned from its existence. -- g WE RESENT footing a major portion of the annual bill for an organization which too often runs a course contrary to justice such as and whose in the China case Frank Williams in the Detroit Free Press here by seamail. BOX 'BACK At the same time, however, we avoid the reality of being a neighbor to every nation on this shrinking globe of ours. We face a past necessity of looking philosophical and political differences for the greater sake of living together in peace and cooperation as best we can. From The Files Of The Box Elder Veteran s Day . . . More Than Just a Holiday Few Americans will really consider the reason for Mondays Veterans Day observance. It comes as a day off for many from the usual work routine, an opportunity to pursue leisure pastimes. But we believe its important at this time particularly to focus on this tribute to the veterans of military service. Why now? Because the military is the target of abuse, almost to the point of painting our servicemen as villains in the drama of Vietnam. Because so many young people have refused to serve their country, preferring instead to leave the country or avoid conscription in other ways. BECAUSE youthful demonstrators have burned ROTC buildings and abused this training program for military service in other ways, as if this would accomplish anything constructive. And finally, because so many men and women from the founding of this nation have spilled their blood, served to preserve a nation of freedom, to defend and preserve the and concept of free agency. Ironic about the current tide of feeling against the military is that it flows from many who have never contributed to the greatness and promise that is America THROUGH NO effort of their own, payments of many generations. Their vocal and violent attacks on the benefactor repels reason. However, they do not diminish the importance of the role played by our veterans and those serving in the armed forces today. We are Americans serving for the cause of freedom. If this is wrong then weve been in error from the beginning. Use Caution on Lake The Brigham City councils recent stand against using state funds to alter the Southern Pacific causeway to permit free flow of Great Salt lake waters and Golden Spike Empires request for the Utah State board to exercise extreme caution in considering drilling lease applications on the lake have our endorsement. The situation on the lake created by the causeway obviously is causing a hardship on salt companies at the southern end. They face an uncertain future because of it with saline content of waters south of the causeway declining. But, however the problem is resolved, Utah Tax payers should not have to foot the bill. WHERE OIL dilling is concerned, the initial payment for leases would be substantial, around $1 billion, with potential for greater return to the state if drilling were successful. Yet, the financial promise should be considered secondary to the findings of a full feasibility study. Really Want to Know? and state legislative positions. The Brigham City Jaycees, as a public service, will present the hopefuls in a public session intended to air their views on issues of the day. Theyll answer questions and attempt to make themselves better known to the local electorate. The whole thing will take place in the community center beginning at 7:30 p.m. Charlas W.
