Brigham City, Utah Sunday, August 29, 1971 BOX ELDER NEWS, Tourism Needs New Look Now The tourist season is virtually at an end with schools opening across the country, pulling families back to home base from their summer vacations. Locally, Brigham City and the local chamber of commerce have closed up shop at the tourist information booth on south Main and the scenic overlook on Alternate U.S. 89. It seems time to heave a sigh and put away travel thoughts for another season. But not really. Wed suggest its an opportune point in the years course to evaluate the successes and failures behind us and plan for better things in the future. WE MEAN PUTTING together figures and visitor comments from our various attractions and tourist stopping places; taking an overview of existing literature, signs, methods of approach and programs intended to stimulate tourism. In past issues, these columns have plugged for more vigoruous promotion, reasoning that this seasonal industry is one of the cleanest and most rewarding sources of economic input available to northern Utah. Weve charged that locally our share of the tourist dollar is less than it could be, the result of d promotional public indifference and efforts. A similar accusation was leveled atthe state in general during an economic development conference in Salt Lake City last week. half-hearte- TELLS us is that weve got to do a better job and the planning should begin now, not at some indefinite time in the future when haste will help make waste of our opportunities. Golden Spike Empire, Inc., already is moving to establish a new caboose theme for its tourist stops and putting a finger also on the need to orient local people on tourism, another point at which weve hammered repeatedly. WHAT THIS WERE TOLD THAT VISITOR numbers were down substantially at Golden Spike National Historic site during July this year. This is an excellent opportunity for local people, particularly those over 35 years old, to cause check for symptoms of this second-leadin- g of blindness in America. Probably, you dont have glaucoma. It strikes only about two percent of this countrys population over 40 years old. That makes the odds pretty good in your favor. BUT CONSIDER ALSO that you may fall within the afflicted group. You may have glaucoma. Six persons did when the Lions held a similar clinic here 11 years ago and 12 others were found to be borderline cases. Glaucoma in its most common form can destroy vision slowly and painlessly, sometimes without arousing any warning signs or symptoms in its victim until most of his sight is gone. : ; i : : : - : I THE NATIONAL SOCIETY for the Prevention of Blindness estimates that more than 1,682, 10C American adults 35 and older have glaucoma and half of them are not aware of it. Blindness from glaucoma is irreversible; that is, vision once destroyed can never be restored. However, once detected, it can be controlled and further visual loss prevented, either through surgery or medication. Its really not worth the risk when the clinic offers free examination service. Dont gamble with your eyesight. The odds still arent that good. QGW0I3 (Pi OPtn;o;i 1 S EVERETT, WASH., HERALD: What would business in the vou guess is the fastest-growin- g United States? It was because women have the right to vote. Thats right, it was on Aug. 26, 1920 that the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution became effective, giving the little lady an opportunity to elect crooks to office, just like the manly males of the time. However, we broad-minde- d Utahns had extended this privilege far sooner.
