Mrs. Anita Burt, city beautification chairman, said initial efforts would be concentrated on the junior high campus And this past Friday thats just what happened as 14 eighth ?rade students and 11 seventh-graders cleaned up rocks, litter, weeds, etc. from east of the gymnasium. PASS IN REIVEW Members of the Box Elder High school NJROTC unit pass in review to climax their recent week stay at the Naval Training center in San Diego, Calif The local cadets placed units in competitive catagories and first-yea- fifth among 19 were first among units. r Cadets Spend Week At Naval Training Center BEITS I Forty cadets from the Box Elder High school units were among 800 Naval Junior ROTC members spending April at the Naval Training center in 9 San Diego. The young cadets, coming from 10 different states, were given a taste of boot camp and the local contingent came away the experience, J. according to Robert Michaels, commanding officer and chief instructor, who accompanied them. They even found that Navy food is not as bad as they had said thought it would be, Commander Michaels smiling. The experience must have agreed with them. The local lads placed fifth among 19 in schools competitive categories of infantry drill, rifle and personnel inspection. They were fourth by a slim margin in shooting and emerged first among the first year units. appreciating Outstanding Cadet Delose Conner, cadet company commander, received the outstanding Box cadet award Elder from Capt. tot Alan Cameron, training center commanding officer. Nineteen high schools took part in the intensive training for future naval officers from as far away as Wisconsin, Michigan, and Montana. The largest representation came from Shawnee Mission, Kan., which had units from five schools. Two units trained from Albequerque, N.M., and four were cities California Santa Lakewood, represented: Ana, San Clemente, and Long Beach. Other states included in this, the largest group of NJROTC cadets ever assembled there were Idaho, Texas, Illinois, and Utah. Only Representative Box Elder was the Beehive states lone representative. Another group will go at it again next Friday, probably at another location on campus. They learned all of the many exercises used in the phsycial fitness test used by the Navy. Cleaned Up Barracks Something that the average 8 y is not accustomed to is cleaning up 14-1- year-old-bo- barracks, but they have learned the Navy way of each man cleaning up his own space.
