Part of this situation can have resulted from the fact that effective drugs have already been produced for many of our serious diseases... that, because of this success, research laboratories are now turning to the much more complicated study of such things as cancer and the diseases of old age. The total amount paid for research, during drug 1966, has been estimated to have been approximately four hundred million dollars ($400,000,000.00) for which only eleven (11) new, basic drug products were produced. 1959, for example, saw 63 new drug products on thenarket, and the lowest previous year on record for new drug production was 1965 when only 17 new drugs were introduced.
