Shes still chuckling about that and swears next time shes going to ship bushels - says it will be cheaper. Brigham City, Utah Sunday, March 16, 1969 ELDER NEWS, nuggets n . pedestrians. There was a plea voiced to the Brigham City council recently for a sidewalk to serve Foothill Ele- mentary school; students there presently must walk in the street when going to and from school. AND A reply was that even if a sidewalk were provided, many children would continue to use the streets because they do it in other areas. Many readers must have nodded their heads in agreement alter recalling how theyve had to dodge and weave around youngsters walking abrest on a roadway without apparent concern for vehicular traffic. Young people should be impressed with the fact that streets were built for cars. Unfortunately, there are too few sidewalks in Brigham City which y in much relegates foot traffic to the road is license of the town. But this to disregard monot tor traffic or to challenge it. Parents, remind your children constantly ot the danger involved and when you are behind the wheel, remind yourself that youngsters often forget. right-of-wa- You Can Help Vandalism in Box Elder countys remote regions nothing new and few occurances of destruction surprise law officers any more. But still the thoughtless actions of shooting up a sheep camp left on Hogup mountain as an emergency shelter for lost hunters is upsetting. If you read a story in Thursdays Box Elder Journal you know thats what happened last week. THIS KIND of wanton dirty work must be attributed to the most unprincipaled kind of person. Unfortunately we have little success in catching the culprits since damages and thefts at summer farm homes, utility buildings, and to equipment often goes undiscovered for days. Certainly you cant blame landowners for wanting to build up a high legal fence to keep everybody out. SHERIFF WARREN HYDE has long since concluded that most of the guilty parties come into Box Elder county from other areas. Most of them pro- Babiy come here to hunt but lose interest or failing v to find enough game, turn to plinking holes in tractors and windows or carting off a farmers television set or tools. The sheriffs office cant possibly patrol the vastness of this county to the extent that such occurances will be eliminated. But they can be assisted in substantial degree by a concerned public. We mean the honest citizen who, while in the western county area, will stay alert and write down license numbers of suspicious vehicles and report any questionable activity which he observes. If we can make it tough enough on these vandals and thieves and publicize the fact, perhaps theyll decide to take up hunting somewhere else. is I City Limited workdisappointing that a national Indian conducted in be w ill not Brigham shop on education as originally planned. City March 23-2Instead the week-lon- g program will be staged in Ogden, except for one day when Indian leaders Its 8 have asked to come to Brigham City. It was our impression that they would like to have held all sessions here. Representatives were a warmly impressed with local hospitality during school Intermountain the session campus on planning late last year. BUT THE HARD facts are that Brigham City to host simply doesnt have sufficient accomodations this gathering of 200 persons. There are just U2 motel beds total in our community. Spokesmen said there was no alternative but to transfer the affair to Ogden where facilities are more adequate. THE CHAMBER of Commerce has wrestled with this problem before and a couple of years ago when the Jaycees hosted their annual state consen-tion- , a number of vacant apartment building units were furnished and pressed into service. But these apartments are no longer vacant. We must, it seems, face the harsh reality that conBrigham City is limited in its capacity to be a vention city. See The Light! Well, we had occasion again this past week to attend a night meeting in the Box Elder County courthouse and found the backgrounds to be just as dark and unlighted as in the past. As previously suggested, the county commission should take steps to do something about it. Light poles and recepticles already exist at the rear of the building. We dont know the condition of the wiring but surely it would require little to make the fixtures operative again; just screwing in a bulb, maybe. Heres hoping the county fathers will soon sec ! the light along with the rest of us X. ; f yr n , 1 ' k ,M; L. We perceive no purpose in trying to fix the blame in any of these accidents; the circumstances of each were different and the contributing factors several. IT IS appropriate, however, to remind parents that safety for themselves and their children is largely their responsibility. C., I had recently opportunity to visit with an old friend, Ann Rutledge, one of those nice persons who in in moved to Brigham City, lived here long enough to love it and then went with her husband (Carlton) when his work took him And honestly, Ann, if have occasion to get back your way again sometime, Ill be sure to bring along a jar or two of Box Elder peaches just to watch your eyes light up. Mr. and Mrs. R. hang their hats now in Arnold, MD., just a dollars throw from the nation's capital (thats short distance because, as you know, a dollar doesnt go very far any more.) You know what Ann said she wanted more than anything? Seems Some bottled peaches. they dont have many peach trees in her new neck of the woods or much of any other kind for that matter. As a result, Ann didnt bottle anything last year. Wow, that would kill us at our house. Once you get hooked on local peaches, it's tough to break the habit.
