Show Violation of Rights letters to the Hditor...M I I U.S.MAI1 Dear Sir: I would like the opportunity to reply to your editorial of March 11, 1965 (Personally Speaking, by KTWC). In your editorial, you mentioned my letter of the same date as a valid argument against Fluoridation of the public water supply. In my letter I was critical of socialising fluoridation. Your answer to this was, and I quote, And I guess after all, weve gone down the socialism trail so far, why should we hold bafck one more demand from government." I am not against the use of fluoride, but I am against socialism, apparently, you are against neither. Your editorial makes it apparent why America has become more and more socialistic over the past 40 yrs In every case socialism Is wrapped in a pretty package and given an acceptable name, such as fluoridation, subsidy, Medical care etc. But after about 40 years of this, the pretty paper comes off the package and leaves us with bare socialism. 'Perhaps socialized fluoridation in itself, is not such an important thing, but what is important is the trend toward more and more socialism. With this kind of an attitude of accepting socialism a little at a time, means that in 10 years or so this county will be com-ipletel- y Sincerely, Don L. ' theSuch a adjust - . , - ntv proposition is the proposal to have our city the fluoride content ot our water to the optimal level. Let me explain what I mean by "adjust the fluoride content. Fluoride Is a natural constituent of fresh water on our contenent as well as of the waters of our The fluoride concentration of surrounding oceans. fresh water in the United States ranges from 0.1 ppm (parts per million) to 27 ppm. The concentration in our sea water ranges from 1.0 Fluoride is also present in most all the to 1.4 ppm. foods we eat, especially fish. With these facts in mind, it is difficult to understand how any form of life on land or sea could have s survived unless it was fully able to cope with a intake of fluoride from its environment. The fluoride ion concentration of fresh water along the Wasatch range, and this includes our present Brigham City water supply, is approximately .2 ppm. As the recommended amount of fluoride in the drinking water is 1.0 ppm this would mean that our water should have an increased concentration. If 1 were living in a town in the Texas panhandle or around Rexburg, Idaho or Colorado Springs, Colorado where the natural fluoride of the water is 2.5 ppm, two and times the recommended amount, then it would be best if some were removed. In areas where the residents are fortunate enough to have the optimal level of fluoride in the water, and there are many of these, the only differences in the health is that the children and adults have teeth which are much more resistant to decay processes and have a brighter sheen. Like iodine and certain other naturally occuring substances required by the body, fluoride can be toxic if taken in large doses. In an article published in 1954 by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Hodge & Smith stated that to be poisoned from water fluoridated at 1.0 ppm, an adult would have to consume 660 gallons or a child 165 gallons within 2 to 4 hours. Cant Stand Public Gaze Dear Editor: Congratulations for your article on fluoridation in I note with interest the March 2 Box Elder News. the proponents propoganda article in your March 4 edition. The proponents ot fluoridation are still using the same specious arguments that Utah voters have rejected every time they have had the chance to vote on them. For eight years, from 1953 to 1961, I was chairman of the Utah Citizens Committee Against 'Fluoridation. During this eight years, fluoridation went to referendum eight times, and was defeated eight times. Ogden, Clearfield, American Fork, Springville, Vernal,' Price, Kearns, and Salt Lake City have all voted down the proposal to add a known cumulative poison to the disease, public water supply for a Salt Lake voted 35,000 against, 10,000 for. Fluoridation of municipal water supplies cannot stand the public gaze. The day you printed the headline. A person should not be forced against his will to take a food or drug for a disease. It just so happens that fluoridation is not sound medically or dentally, but the moral issue should be sufficient for those citizens who recognize freedom of choice as the foundation of all liberties and happiness. Every benefit promised by proponents of compulsory fluoridation is available to those who want It by alternative methods. Fluorides are available in tablets and food supplements, where they can be accurately controlled, and given only to those to whom they are intended. Respectfully, Clinton R. Miller Washington, D.C. Utah Tuesday, March 16 1965 An article under the caption "A HOT POTATO was published in your Feb. 25, edition reporting that the Brigham City Kiwanis club has urged the city council to take immediate steps to fluoridate the citys municipal In order that your readers may be in a position to evaluate this controversial issue for themselves, it is well to explain that this fluoridation kick-off- " was projected by a representative of the United States Public Health service in Washington, D.C , who, as usual, is making use of a local service club to carry the ball for him. Because no epidemic or contagious condition exists, why is all this immediacy of action so necessary? It is amazing how deplorable some aspects of childrens diseases become once a benevolent specialist succeeds in getting himself on the public payroll. Basic rights of American citizens, including the freedom of choice of remedial measures for the prevention and healing of diseases, are fully protected by the Constitution of the United States and as stated therein, no governmerKel agency shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens and neither shall equal protece ion be denied any person. Fluoridation of the public water supply constitutes an unequivocal violation of such protection. All to often, these "department crusaders" fail to respect the rights of the parents to choose the method of prevention and treatment of disease of their qhildren that in their common-sens- e judgement best supplies and fits the need. The proponents of fluoridation have repeatedly admitted that fluorides in water have nothing to offer adults therefore, no valid reason can be advanced for adults to be forced to drink water so treated. Fluoridation of the public water supply an erosion of the individuals freedom and right of decision. This is not a Governmental prerogative or function. tor means available There are other ingesting fluorides into the physical system of children whose parents wish to make use of this chemical for their offspring. Fluoride tablets, as an example, are available at any local drug store and at a nominal cost; there are also private fluoridation systems which may be obtained for home use; or the family dentist' can paint the childrens teeth with a fluoride solution. The above is a presentation of "the other side of the coin" to enable your readers to judge for themselves in the light of their constitutional "rights". water-supply- Against Socialism, Not Fluoridation Socialism ds sold as a humanitarian act, of one group giving to another group, (the haves giving to the have nots). But is .this true? Doesnt it represent taking rather than giving? Isnt it that the have nots form a majority at the polls, and by confiscatory taxation, take from the haves? 'Rather than respresenting generosity, doesnt it misrepresent it? Actually isnt socialism legalized plunder? I hate to see my Country become socialized, as J know that you cannot serve two masters. "Ye cannot serve God and Mammon". Do the socialists believe this, apparantly they do, otherwise, why is the traveling companion of socialism atheism? The socialists of Russia feel a need to denounce the existence of God, Hitlers socialists of the 1930s felt a need to denounce the existence of God. As our beloved Country becomes more and more socialistic, we can observe signs of atheism looming on the horizon of our nation. The Supreme court rend- ered a decision making it unconstitutional for any state to require a belief in God as a qualification for public office. The Supreme court has made it unpathriotic for public schools to teach children to pray, by ruling against saying a prayer in the New York schools. I believe we must stop the spread of socialism at every opportunity. As socialism increases, free agency diminishes. You state in your editorial regarding socialized fluoridation, the C09t is measured in pennies. I say, the cost is measured in freedom.
