Red, and only red, colored head-geashirt, jacket or sweater must be worn whenever hunting big game in Utah. This reminder was issued by the department of fish and game this week in answer to recurring questions about whether there has been any change in this law covering big game hunting clothing. Spokesmen said any contemplated change in the color of .clothing required during big game hunts would be announced at least a year in advance of the yearly hunts. Board of big game control studies concerning the relative safety factors of several colors have shown that yellow is not necessarily the safest color for use when hunting big game. The answer again, Red is the required color of such clothing as it has been for many, many State Releases 07,532 Chukars A total of 107,532 chukar partridge have been released into 134 planting sites over the state during the past ten years, according ed from brood stocks at states to the Utah Department of Fish Fish Planting period. State Invites Visitors To Hatcheries Each year many thousands of persons visit Utah Department of Fish and Game properties over the state. A major portion of these visits occur during the spring and early summer months. Department director Harold S Crane this week again extended an to visit invitation department hatcheries and other properties the warm months ahead. during He noted that a visit to any of the hatcheries is timely during the spring period when they are crowded with various sizes of fish awaiting the planting period just ahead These hatcheries are located at Logan, Salt Lake City, Midway Whiterocks, Springville, Fountain Green, Glenwood, Loa, Beaver, Kamas and Panquitch. Our department Crane said, welcomes visitors at all times. We are well aware of the recreational and educational values derived from these visits. Club, school Boy Scout and other groups may arrange for conducted tours by contacting in advance the depart ment supervisors of these proper Census Shows Good Stock Of Pheasants The annual winter census of pheasants over the state shows a of brood birds and good carry-ove- r an exceptionally high ratio of roos ters to hens, according to the Utah Department of Fish and Game. An average of sex ratio of one rooster to 3.8 hens was noted among the 17,801 birds counted by conservation officers during the census period. Average ratio over the past seven years is one rooster to 4.32 hens. The department said one male to ten female birds is considered adequate for maintaining the species, with the high ratio of roosters shown during this years census an indication that more of the male birds might well be harvested by the hunter. Present brood bird numbers point toward a good crop of birds for the fall hunting season, dependent upon weather and other factors during the spring egg laying, brooding and hatching period.
