West, executive secretary of the Utah Education Association. THE STUDY, entitled Why They Teach and Quit, was made under the direction of Dr. Jefferson N. Eastmond, UEA director of research. The loss of 1,044 teachers constitutes 12 per cent of the entire teaching force and means, says the study, that Utah must replace the equivalent of an entire new staff of teachers every eight years. This ratio of teacher turnover for Utah is excessively high in comparison with teacher turnover in other states, Dr. Eastmond said. It reveals that more than s of them began to date before 16, girls usually dating about two years earlier than boys. s About of the girls and less than half of the boys sought their parents permission for the first date. three-fourth- THE REASONS why Utah teachers left their posts, together with the number leaving in parenthesis, are: to asume home responsibilities (428; to teach in another state to enter (173); to retire (126); some other business or profession tb go to school (50); to (117); teach in a higher institution c in to teach (32); schools (19); and other reasons (99). Fewer than half as many teachers retired as left to teach in another state or to enter another business or profession. The typical teacher who left received an annual salary increase of $1,312 above his Utah teaching salary, according to the study. Those who left to teach in other states received a typical increase in annual income of $1,291. Those who left their Utah teaching positions to enter another business or profession, improved their annual earnings by $2 004, the study shows. three-fourth- Time Limits About half the parents of both boys and girls required them to be in on week nights by ten oclock. Most of the rest Bet midnight as the limit. Almost half the parents held the line at two nights a week or less. The other half allowed three or more nights. Bovs were given more freedom than girls. 1arents Differentiated s More than of the parents allowed their daughters to go out only W'ith boys the parents knew and approved. California received 37.7 percent of the total of 173 teachers who left last year to teach in another state. According to the study, more teachers went to California than left to teach in all other western states A breakdown of combined. the states benefiting from the Utah teacher migration with the percentage of the total are: California, 37.7 percent; Idaho, 9.7 percent; Arizona, 7.9 percent; Oregon, 4.4 percent; Wyoming, 3.5 percent; Colorado, 2.6 percent; Washington, 2.6 percent; all other states, 26.3 percent. of the Utah teachers forsaking their classrooms in 1960 had one year or less of teaching experience following graduation. Reasons given by teachers for leaving their Utah positions, in order of frequency of responses, were: (1) to assume home responsibilities or to move with their families to other locations; (2) in(3) adequate teaching salaries; (4) inadequate salary potential; desire for new and broader exclass (5) excessive periences; size; (6) shortage of teaching materials and supplies. just any dance was strictly taboo. Also parents were generally concerned about liquor and about sons or daughters go ng to places where it was likely to be served. Most boys not dating money as the reason. No Car In the lower economic group, almost of the boys felt blocked in dating for lack of a car. Also, the boys named shyness and fear of being turned down.
