But the reality of 1960s problems is that all businesses and jobs are now facing too many customers here and abroad who will not, and do not have to, pay the present prices, much less the higher ones proposed. Therefore, ways must be found to obtain higher productivity and to convert it into values and prices that will secure expanding markets, steady customers, increasing volume and more jobs. But what really is productivity? Perhaps the following points from a recent General Electric management letter can better define it: 1. "Productivity" is a measure of the overall efficiency with which goods and services are produced that is, the ratio uf the output of goods and services to the input of resources. It encompasses all factors which increase the overall productive efficiency of the business, such as capital, innovation, technical proficiency, materials, managerial know-how- . 2. Employee el fort alone is seldom the major force which brings about higher productivity. In modern industry greater output almost always results from many different factors, particularly better machines and processes which come from technological change and creative innovation. 3. Measuring productivity is difficult because so many statistics must be gathered and estimates must be made that are based on incomplete data. 4. tie measure of national productivity developed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics should be inttrprettd in the light of two facts, (1) the BI.S index is not and was never intended to be a measure of changes solely in employee output, or annual changes in the BLS index may ami (2) short-terhave little significance when compared will) the ; s 1 BOX LUNCHES Chicken, f rench fries, hot buttered rolls (, olden Brown Shrimp, flies, rolls, cocktail sauce Deep fried fish and Chips, rolls, cocktail sauce JUNIOR SIZE BOXES of Chicken, Shrimp and Veal HOT DOG ON A STICK SI. 21 $1.25 83c 83c Vi 5 RIMGSID lung-rang- 380 1, i 5. i j for a man who knows , " &' ' 4 the needs of Box Elder County and will make YOU tive a good representain the State VOTE FOR J. Granting txcessive wages feeds an automatic inflationary reaction by higher prices throughout the economy. Tims, although inflationary wage settlements may bring higher dollar wages, these do not usually result in higher real wages.
