Kelley, Chief of the Western Fertilizer and Water Research Branch, Management United States Department of culture, Fort Codings, Colo., was the featured speaker at the dedication of the new California Spray Chemical Plant at Kennewick, Wash., on May 17. Dr. Kelley graphically pointed out the need for the use of more commercial for the coming years here in the west with the following examples: Lets consider for a moment the rate at which farming efficiency has been climbing through the years. Back in 1820, a farm worker was able to produce enough food for four persons, including himself. Forty years later, in 1860, he still could feed only 4.5 persons. By 1900, the number had increased to seven, and by 1940 he was feeding 11 persons. Thus, it took 120 years to increase the number he could fee dfrom four to 11, a net gain of seven ersons, he said. But look what has happened since 1940. Between 1940 and 1958, he increased his efficiency to the produce point where he could enough food for 23 persons, a net increase of 12. This means that in less than 20 years the average farm worker has approximately doubled the gains that were achiev ed during the previous 120 years. This phenomenal achievement unmatched by any other country in the world is a direct result of the application of more efficient farm practices developed through research The skillful use of fertilizers ranks high among these improved practices, Kelley pointed out. By the year 210, we will need twice as much food and other farm products as we consume today, i or PA Tired of TV smog and eyestrain? Let us give you up to 70 more vie; ing pleasure.
