As it was, one man was thrown to the ground, getting some bad bruises, while John Richards lies at the hospital here, his body almost torn to shreds, and his eyesight in question. Mr. Richards and a young man by the name of Johnson, both from Mantau, were working in the mine, and on News Years day they placed two shots, one of which failed to explode. Nothing more was done until Tuesday morning when they continued their labors. Evidently they had forgotten about the one shot not going off and Richards began striking his pick into the earth when there was a terrific explosion, which threw earth in every direction, and knocked Johnson, who was at the mouth of the tunnel, senseless.
