Drive-I- n In a daytime production Monday, two men were on the silver ;"4 ' f t ' , '' : , n t - J -- ' j ' screen at the Canyon drive-itheatre. They werent cinema stars oppearing in the latest Hollywood extravaganza. Rather, their props consisted of scaffolding, paint and brushes and their roles were those of painters putting a new coat on the giant 70 by 40 feet screen. . . . the latest of many new improvements at the outdoor theatre. Located near the mouth of Box Elder canyon, the drive-ihas undergone considerable face liftAltera ing since early spring. tlons have included construction of a new box office, marquee and snack bar plus remodeling of restrooms. Manager Clayton Cheney said the improvements all have been intended to make the Canyon drive-ia nicer place to go. The completely rebuilt snack bar, though not the largest, is classed as one of the finest in Utah. It boasts a full window view of the screen with, speaker so that patrons will not miss any of the show while buying refreshments. The interior walls are paneled with chip wood and mahogany. PAT ; PAINTERS SCREEN TEST The Canyon drive-i- n theatre screen received a new coat of paint Monday and it was an up and down job for the men who were handling the brushes. Beecher, math teacher at Box Elder Junior High, is one of 49 participants in a National Science Foundation sponsored summer Institute for secondary school teachers of science and mathematics at Utah State University, The institute began June 15 and will run for 10 weeks. A grant of $75,800 from NSF supports the institute, aimed at upgrading science and mathematics preparation of teachers In junior high schools. Beecher was selected from among several hundred applicants from all over the nation. Sixteen states are represented. Primary criterion for selection was capaci'y to develop as a teacher and profit from the program, according' to Dr. Neville C. Hunsaker, head of the mathematics department at Utah State U., and institute director. The institute Is a special feature of Utah State Universitys 1959 National Summer school. This, plus new and remodeled car speakers provides added volumes and better quality of tone, Cheney said. There are 220 speakers now in service with facilities for adding more.
