Show anw County Boasts Pipeline Station Box Elder county has its own satellite. This particular satellite isnt one of the roving kind, in fact it never leaves the ground, but its complex internal mechanism competes with any now circling the globe. The object in point is a satellite booster station operated by the Salt Lake Pipeline comsubsidiary pany, a wholly-owneof Standard Oil of California. It is located about five miles west of Corinne on a knoll. The operation does what its name implies. That is it provides a push or boost to petroleum products pouring through the companys underground pipe line which extends from Salt Lake City to Spokane, Wash. What makes the stations story an interesting one, is that it thinks for itself with a little supervision some 70 miles away. It is an pumping operation with an internal, automatic control system of its own. Alarm Control Devise y Station Engineer George explains that an alarm-contro- l device has been included for every possible emergency. While the station is helping to pump as much as 56,000 barrels a day, a man sits in the dispatchers office in Salt Lake City to make sure it behaves. He does this by remote control. The control cabinet in the station office registers varying activity and transmits this information to the Salt Lake overriding control units. The transmission is done via a circuit providel by the local telephone office. The mechanical messages race from the station to the Brigham office and are relayed to Salt Lake City. The dispatcher may stop or start operations at the Corinne station as necessity dictates. Electrical power to operate the motor, which is connected to a horizontal centrifugal pump, comes in from west of Tremonton. The line is capable of carrying a 44,000-vol- t power load. The power is trimmed to 2,400 volts by a Utah Power and Light transformer to operate the electric motor. A smaller transformer reduces the number of volts for lights and other electrical operations at the station. Malony, Electrical Design Engineer Jack Cunningham, and a battery of other engineers made last final efficiency checks weekend. Working out any kinks before letting the new-bortechnical infant take its first steps. Difficulties Some of the difficulties that might occur are overheated bearings in the motor or pump or excessive vibration. In event either should happen, the operation would automatically shut down since it works on a sequence. With this, the petrointo leum products, streaming the Northwest, would bypass the station. Light fuel products such as motor gas and stove oil make up most of the petroleum subway traffic. Crude Oil Shipped A good share of the crude oil shipped in to refiners comes from Rangeley, Colo., by way of a pipeline owned by the company. The establishment of satellite booster stations is relatively new, having been developed since World War II. The efficiency of the system has been borne out by the fact that unmanned stations are commonplace now. Situated on two acres of ground, south of the road lead BIRTHS I,,,. -.- 1..
