Special supervision, counsel, and advice is obtained from building contractors in Tremonton and Brigham City. Much of their time is being donated to the project To date, over 1200 hours of labor have been donated by interested persons. Organized in 1907 From the time the first Mormon Sunday school was orga-nizeback in January 1907 until now, all activities of the church, and most community events were held in the school About 1918 there buildings. ' were five Mormon Sunday schools and five day schools in operation along the promontory from the summit where the gold spike was driven 'southward to the Promontory Point. Due to a decrease in population and inactivity, about 1936, there was no organized church activity at all for a period of two years. In the spring of 1938 following stake missionary contacts there was a all Sunday school organized forwere of the area. Meetings held in the abandoned East Side school building, making distances of 15 miles for those at the south end to drive and 10 miles for those at the Summit. Purchase East Side Building In 1945, the Presiding Bishopric purchased the East Side building and plans were drawn for remodeling it into a chapel. Interest lagged until a couple of years ago when a building fund was started for the remodeling project which never materialized. Build Chapel by School In August of last year, the school board, under the leader- who ship of Wayne Sandall, South was also a member of the Bear - River stake presidency, met with the people and proposed that tho chapel be built on a lot adjacent to the Promontory school. The school was moved from the south end of Promontory to a more central location in 1947. The board was the planning an addition to both school and suggested that the church and school could utilize the facilities kitchen, -- ' rest rooms, water, and play- ground to better advantage. When completed the chapel can be used for many of the extrathe of curricular activities school. 0 A decision had to be reached - on what to do about a chapel either to move ttte East Side building and remodel it, orthere was a possibility of buyIng the Penrose ward chapel which was vacated when Pen- rose and Thatcher wards merg- ed in February of 1955. (Promde-ontory had always been a Penrose the of branch pendent ward until December 1954, when It was organized as an Independent branch of the South Bear River stake.) Purchase Penrose Chapel A committee was selected to assist the branch presidency, and an agreement was reachedto purchase the Penrose build ing and move it to a site just west of the school. Plans were drawn for a basement foundation which will include a rec- ' reation room that can toe divided into classrooms by the use of folding doors, a furnace room and coal storage, and eventual- - y, a kitchen and rest rooms. Contractors have estimated the - completed structure to be a $30,-00- 0 building, but because the - interior of the Penrose chapel is with complete seating, rugs and draperies, and because of the great amount of labor contributed to the project, it will cost considerably less WEY-RIT- Home From Japan Tour Persons who pay their life!
