Two Cars Collide; John Owen, former instructor at Box Elder High school, was named superintendent of schools for the South Summit School district this week and will assume his new post at Kamas next Monday morning. Owen has been doing graduate work on his doctor's degree at Utah State Agricultural college this summer, having received his masters degree from that college in 1951. He received his bachelor degree from the University of Utah in 1935. He is a member of Phi Delta Kappa, national educational fraternity. For the past six years, Owen has been servifig with the armed forces, four years of which was spent as an instructor at USAC after which he was stationed at Ft. Sill, Okla., where he served for a year as education officer and last year in Germany as personnel officer. He was released from duty on April 1 of this year. During World War II he spent five years in service with the army, much of it in the Pacific theatre of action. He taught at Box Elder High school for three years before the war and two years following. She was born October 29, 1880 at Willard, the daughter of Robert Bell and Gwen Davis Baird. She was reared and educated in Willard where she has resided all of her life. She married John Laird Nelson, December 21, 1910, at Ogden, later receiving her endowments in the Logan LDS temple. He died 15 years ago. She was the first railroad telegraph operator for the Union Pacific in Willard, a position she held for several years. She was art active member of the L.D.S. church and served for many years as organist and block teacher for the Relief society. During the past 15 years she has been a genealogical worker. She was a member of the Sunflower camp of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Glen (Carma) Simper, Salt Lake City; three sons, Wallace Baird Nelson, Salt Lake City; Roy Nelson, Willard; and Robert Nelson, Ogden; 12 grandchildren; four brothers and sisters, Mrs. Angus Ward, Willard; Mrs. Pearl Bowen, Ogden; Henry Baird, Bountiful; and Malcolm Baird, Willard. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p. m. in the Willard ward chapel with Bishop Kunzler William officiating. Friends may call at the family home at, Willard, Thursday evening and Friday morning until time of service. Interment will be in the Willard cemetery under direction of the Harold B.
