X His best friend, of course, is Cindy, the " black haired, fatish dog that follows j around with adoration in her eyes. A report Bill and Cindy have been the closest Sfchums as long as we caif remember. Bill would often tie a red ribbon around Cindys I neck and the dog actually acted proud of its .reminine decoration. After the fire noticed Cindy walking d around the burned mattress and bed springs tosSed out of the window of the home, look-ing them over, apparently wondering what all the commotion was about and where Bill fwas. Cindy was obviously worried. we I . Bracken Lees popularity has - Governor low as a result of his resolute hit an all-tifs (school teachers call it bullheaded) stand on not calling a special legislature. Both of the big newspapers are agin him, and he usually enjoys their support; the F school teachers are agin, him; the general public is agin him. Wonder how hes get-- v ting along with hia wife. i ... .. One thing about Lee, though, that f must credit, him with is that Jieli r you tangle During the first few fire alarm calls following the arrival of Mayodans fine fire truck a month ago, ,the fire chasers were so eager and so thick that they gravely hampered the efficiency of the firemen and their equipment. To correct this situation the city officials published a notice in The Messenger to the effect that all persons who followed the fire truck in their cars or who parked their cars within one block of a fire would be subject to prosecution and fine. Since the publication of that notice seven persons have been made to pay fines of $10 plus costs. The firemen report that at their latest call the situation had greatly improved. Perhaps Madison could profit from this example. The Messenger (Madison, N. C.) with the powerful lobbying organization in the state like Gorgeous George tangles with Gypsy Joe and Ivan The Terrible together. We wrote a long and eloquent (we thought, anyway) editorial about the school boards action in making record of all their actions immediately public and immediately threw it away. It sounded corney. But simply and quickly, we would like to say that we personally appreciate the move so that we can report the important news before it starts drawing flies ; that we think the public appreciates it, because they like to see their business done in a fish bowl; and that it is as American as the Fourth of July to conduct public business in public. it's hot!
