Its pat A Monopoly to say that competition is the life of trade, that a monopoly no matter how benign the monopolist inevitably leads to abuses. We ran into a lot of that during the war. In many cases, competition was the first casualty. And we all got a little tired of being snarled at in places w here (even though we merited little more than snarls) we were accustomed to receiving courteous, reasonably-price- d service. If you dont like it, you dont have to take it! And Helps harder to get than customers. When you know that people are obliged to accept your services, on any terms you proffer, youre likely to get just a bit indepenin your apdent, just a bit proach. Youre apt to get to thinking about what you want, instead of what the customer wants. Monopoly leads to decadence in the way of life in these United States. Sometimes its unavoidable, there are services and trades and businesses in w'hich there is no room for competition, in which competition is unreasonably inefficient and costly and cumbersome. But where those circumstances develop, its the public who self-center- free-enterpri- se suffers. Were getting back to a buyers market again, here in the United States. Slowly but surely more and more lines are getting into the class where the customer is sought, the merchandise or service is in surplus. And it makes living more pleasant. Were all spoiled by sendee. Were used to being waited on, hand and foot figuratively speaking. Were accustomed to having our windshields washed and our shoes shined and our bread cut into slices for us, our milk delivered, and the clerk meet us at the door and inquire pleasantly as to our wants. And these services arent expensive . . . not so long as there is someone else, trying to get started, trying to get ahead, who will render the same or better services for a little less. Its a grand system, this free, open, competitive American way. For whom? For the people, for you and me.
