The "stars may have been somevv hat amateurish, but they had us eating out of their hands. And the setting was perfect. The picture was Brigham On Parade, and it was all photographed in Ilrigham City and south Box Elder county, and the people in the picture all were Ilox Elder county people. It was filmed about ten .wars ago, and it seemed to us it ought to be as interesting to everyone in south Box Elder county as home movies are to the people who take and keep and show them. And along with the pictures of the community and it schools and clubs and institutions and people there was a running that boosted Brigham City. Boosting sometimes seems to be going out of fashion. It seems that whenever we catch ourselves boosting the home town, y check ourseues too often we and make some apologetic and cynical smart-crac- k or about Chamber of Commerce Sinclair Lewis. Did you know on the Lucin cut-otrackage and property alone, the Central Pacific is paying between a seventh and an eighth of the total taxes levied in Box Elder county? That doesn t count the taxes they pay on tne land they own in Box Elder county, the taxes on trackage and property in Brigham Iity, or taxes on the Oregon Short Line railroad. Just on that one stretch the road from Ogden west out across the lake, which by the merest geographic accident happens to be in Box Elder they carry an eighth of our school, county and state property tax burden. One out of every eight youngsters in elementary or high school is educated at the expense of the good old Union Pacific. Thats a total of about five on our block. A month and a half out of every year all our county officers and employes except those paid out of special levy funds are indebted to the for their salary. The levy on the individual propertv owner would be a seventh or eighth more', if it werent for just that one stretch of the railroad. But he did listen com incingly, and he sounded honest and looked sincere w hen he said hed do everything he could for us, in any way whiih he was sure represented the desires of most of the people. He could have got the Deweyville Dam bill out of committee in the last session, he said, but there were some strong letters opposing it which had come from high officers in the state Farm Bureau federation, and he wanted to find out more about sentiment on the matter back home before he put his neck out. Parent-Teache- V Washington to see if any thing could be done to keep Bushnell operating by the Veterans administration, he said, but the matter was too far along. It was too late. He was ready to go to bat for us, he said, but wed have to give him the pitch. Hed do what he could, but he didnt pretend that the senate was stading by, awaiting the word from him, ready to do anything he wanted done. You know, Senator Watkins sort of sounded like what you might call a new style in congress. He reminded us of good old Walt Granger, whos still our pet for the very sound reason that hes doing his best to carry out the job we elected him to do. We hope the party difference wont prevent Walt and Arthur V. (now that weve met him) Irom ganging up and giving us some representation and help, now and then. Our impression is that theyre a pretty good team. The new style congressman although you congressman might call it the isn t omniscient or onmqxitent, as we define it. He doesnt consider his constituency a hunch of dopes who look upon Washington, D. C., as a sort of big rock candy mountain, too intricate and wonderful for ordinary electorate minds to comprehend. He seems to give us credit for knowing enough to realize that a senator is just one man sent into a group of a hundred or so, who cant always count on getting a majority vote for anything he tells them the people of Utah e think they want. In other words, the congressman levels off with you. He shoots you a straight pitch, tactfully but without bellywash or sugar coating, and if he has any ambitions for reeiection hopes you won't hold it against him that he doesnt pretend to be a combination miracle man and Santa Claus.
