There has ibeen quite a mix-u'in furloughs and Ira Nielsen is growing old and squeaky from having to them so many times. He filled out furlough 'blanks dor 50 per cent of the battery for 15 days. Then an order came down that only eight days would be allowed, and new blanks were requiied. The third change called for ten days and the fourth one for ten extenclays with a three-dasion. The final order rests with only 15 per cent of the battery strength able to get furloughs for 13 days plus two week-ends- . Ira had used all of his blanks and then an order came down that any amount of men up to fifty per cent could go home for nine days. Byron Weidman, Wayne Weidman and Clinton Johnson hunted all over the division for three blanks and finally got them from the 145th field artillery. Now they can go home together. It is said that through the month of October 15 per cent may continue to go. Howard Anderson says he would like to come home for the hunting season. Lt. C. Henry Nielsen and family have just returned from Brigham. He says he is glad to be back and thinks our battalion, regimental, brigade, and divisional commanders Lt. Col. Kelsey, Co. West, Brig. Gen. Hervey, and Brig. Gen. Daw-ley- , respectively are very men. Pvt. Grant M Welling, who has transferred to the air corp, is visiting friends in the battery. He reports that his new station has oilcloth table covers which would be a good investment for our battery. The first day he left, he scraped paint from the window panes, the second day he washed them and the third day (today) he has been in charge of the day room. He has to see that no books get stolen and improve his ping pong game. "So you refuse to believe that Im Tonia? she said, with a smile, Jim, how ridiculous of you! Maybe youll believe me when I tell you how much I know about you. You drink too much, smoke too much, and have headaches all the time just like the one you've got now. Jim, who had just lit a cigarette, nervously jerked it from his Ups and crushed it out in an ashtray on the low table before him. I see that Tonia coached you well, he said. She told you all my faults. But it wont work. Im never intoxicated at least, Ive never been drunk enough to lose my senses. Now, come clean. Wheres Tonia? I tell you. Im Tonia. Oh, yeah? And I guess I asked you to marry me the other day in j i j New York. You did, and I turned you down. And you are going to marry David Warren. No. I wrote you a note. Didnt you get jt? I told you in it that everything was oil between David and me. Jim was silent a minute. He reached for another cigarette, but returned it to the package when he caught Sallys glance. Tonia must have told you her life history, he said. I hand it to her shes thorough. And youre a good actress. Thank you, Jim. You used to tell me that I couldnt act, tha. it was your publicity work that had made me. "Oh, cut it out! I tell you I'm not fooled. Wheres Tonia? He sighed. No dice, eh? But let Ive got it doped out right. Tonia had some word from David Warren that made her break with him. She was broken-hearte- d or so she thought. And she was afraid I'd say I told you so.' So she decided to go off somew here and hide herself. She hired you, through some theatrical agency you, an unknown young actress looking like to her fool enough strangers. She sent you here with money and clothes and her name. She went into hiding somewhere else. Jim, you're talking through your hat. I know Pm dumb. But not dumb enough to fail for a trick like me see if flattered APPLIANCE ! rushed to Tonia. and. if you were she, you wouldn't bother to be flattered. This is business. The studio gave me oidors to publicize Tonia for all shes worth during the next few months. Men a- so brutal," Sally sighed. I was beyinning to think you I - merely want-- d to see me. Jim smiled. His glance traveled over her, and what he saw seemed, to meet with his approval. You are easy on the eyes if hard on the nerves. Are you going to continue this masquerade which isn't fooling me? Call it a masquerade if you please, Jim. Sally let her lower lip quiver, forced pathos into her voice. But I see through your game. You are sorry you proposed to me the other day, and youre afraid I'll take you up on it, now that Ive broken with David. You pretend to think I'm not me so that I'll be so angry I wont accept you. Jim laughed. Youre a swell actress. You could show Tonia a few tricks. Look, how would you like a screen test? Ill bargain with you. You tell me where Tonia is hiding, and I'll fix you with Premier Pic- tures. Sally said coldly. Jim, I wish JUMPED up suddenly, put his L hands on her shoulders, and you'd stop. I Sally Martin, librarian in the small town of Midvale, is a plain girl who makes no effort to be attractive. hen she unexpectedly loses her job. she leaves Midvale, out in her car for Seaberlh, a seaside resort. On the way, her ear is stolen, and she is given a lift by Tonia Lane, screen star. When she admires Tonia 's beauty, the movie actress tells her she could be as beautiful wi.b the proper make-u- p and clothes. Then, noting that Sally is basically the same tjpe as she, Tonia gets an idea. She wants to go into hiding to try to forget a shattered romance but knows that, unless she disguises herself. She will be recognized wherever she goes. She suggests that she and Sally change identities, with Sally pusing as Tonia Lane, while Tonia acts as her secretary in the role of Sally Martin. W'heu they reach Seaberth, they carry out the plan. Two days later, Jim Kirby, movie publicity man, arrives in search of Tonia.
