Show i DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, DECEMBER WEEKLY REFLEX 1. 1977. Lancers Dominate Defense defensive unit probably the best way to do it, but there are some interesting facts about the classification ratings. For example, people dont expect Davis High to compete with Bountiful High on the athletic field. The Braves are supposed to win, they have the bigger school. In the top three grades, the Braves have 1,450 students while the Darts have 1,037. Thats a difference of 413 students. But on the same line the Braves are supposed to compete with Skyline High in Salt Lake City. As mentioned, the Bountiful school has 1,450 people. Skyline has 2,184 students in grades 10 through 12. Thats a difference of 734 students. THIS IS all well and good, leaders on the Braves defense that was second in the league behind Layton. What Hammer missed from his tackle spot Hazen took care of from the linebacker position. Farmer was a main stay on the up and down Roy club all year. If all the Royals played with the consistency of this player they would have been alright. Bennington is the speedy track star who covered a lot of ground from his safety spot. Rich was considered one of the best linebackers in the league despite his teams poor showing while Harding was a big tackle in almost every play. average? Randy lakes a lot of jokes about his height, things like, the only reason hes such a good goalie is that he dix'sn'l have to bond over, he can stand straight up in the goals. They can joke all they want. Randv is like a giant in the nets, nothing gets by him. When a team as potent as t he Vikes can limit a team to only one goal, then it's easy to realize why their win streak is still going. The Vikes would probably still win if Randy allowed five or six goals a game but he's probably the best goalie in the league. THE other Ynchausti on the is theolderof the two, J.C. who has been on the club for a couple of seasons. J,C. has improved his game vastly over the past two seasons, with the helpof his father and the rest of the team. Dean Layton of the Braves was named to one of the top clubs despite missing a couple of games with an injury. With these two on the line the Braves were very effective. Steve Rudd and Bill Wernli wer selected as second teanu By DAVE WIGHAM Last week the Woods Cross basketball program put their first varsity team on the floor and the results are a sign of things to come in the future. The young Wildcats put on a great show as they lost a heartbreaker to begin their big careers. COACH Wayne Baker and his staff, Clyde Jackson and Rodney Green, should be congratulated for their efforts in putting together this highly competitive outfit. Last year Coach Baker scheduled some of the junior varsity clubs around, those are now the varsity units at many schools, in an effort to s players used to playget ing the older kids on the block. Seems as if those dividends are paying off. A coaching staff can only do so much with the talent they have and believe me the Wildcats have some talent. They have to develop that talent, and that takes time, but the raw materials are definitely there. Leading the way for this young club is their big man Mark McCleery, this 64 center caused havoc on the Lakers of Bonneville last week and promises to be one of the premiere big men in the state in the future. Mark can rebound well and has a great touch for his size. THE guard line also has some talent to go along with the big man in Jeff Ostler and Lynn Westergard. Wayne Kittrell and Rick Snow were two other Lancer players to receive recognition for their efforts. Both were named to the Tribune Club, but somehow they missed the Deseret News. BOTH THESE athletes were main reasons the Layton club did as well as they did. Sam Gallegos and Ben Bubak were second team Gallegos, the hardest hitter on the Lancer club this past year and Bubak was the leader of the club. Two Dart players have been named to all the top clubs, Keith Malnar and Ryan Hill. Malnar was the big fullback who was so tough to bring probably the hardest hitter in the league, was no surprise to the elite club. Neither was teammate John Eccleston who turned in some key plays for the Layton club. BOUNTIFUL, Bonneville and Roy all placed two members of their clubs on the first team with the Braves Ron Hammer and John Hazen, Roys Clint Farmer and Kurt Bennington and Bonneville with Scot Harding and Dan PEOPLE AT Bountiful have never mentioned the moe to 3a and they probably have never seriously thought about the move, but this reporter cant help but think the Braves would be dynamite in 3A. Consider the facts again. Bountiful has Davis has 1,037, which is 413 less. Layton has 1,669, Clearfield has 1,841 and Viewmont has 1,973. A college career awaits this Gallegos, pound for pound Taking into consideration that a couple of schools that never made the state playoffs in 4A have made it big in the 3A ranks, it would seem logical that the Braves would be a powerhouse in that classification. n deserves the recognition The Lancers also placed two people on the first unit at the defensive back position. Sam ranks? 0 be expected the Layton and Davis clubs have had the most number of players selected for the top honors. Maurice Turner has been named to every team that has been named. No one AS WOULD 6-- BOTH THESE schools, Murray and Ogden, had little success in the 4A world. The Bountiful school has had a lot of success, although never winning a crown as of late they have been an annual entrant in the state football wars. Something Murray and Ogden never achieved. So what would the Braves be like if they went into the 3A 5-- 0 final. but his talents didnt go by the coaches. T4ie Lancers huge junior, 5 275 pound Chuck Ehin, was the anchoring force on the down linemen this past season. The Lancers had a number of top defensive line people but big Chuck stood out from the rest. SOMETHING MUST be said for the success of the classification system though. Take the Murray story. A few years ago the Spartans were just another face in the crowd while playing in the larger school bracket. They then went to the lesser enrolled schools, or the 3A ranks, and have won several state titles. Murray has 1,350 students, which is only 100 less than the Bountiful school has. Ogden had fallen in the athletic world to an also run team. This year they are in the 3A ranks and they made it to the state fsemifinals in football before bowing out to Murray 14-Ogden has 1,377 students in their school which is less than 100 students under Bountiful. mont and the sport is ice hockey. The Vikings are the defending state champions in this fast improving'sport and they are undefeated again this mark. year with a perfect Last season the Vikes went through the year posting a perfect 22-- record. Adding those together and the Vikes are 27-- 0 over the past couple of years. Twenty-sevein a row is the longest standing win streak in high school sports. Guiding the club this year is Coach John Ynchausii. His name even sounds like those you hear at a professional hockey match, who has a keen interest in the club in that two of Ins sons are on the team. the just completed football season. All of the newspapers have named their elite squads, and although many people will not agree with all of them, the selections are placing five of their athletes on the first unit and another two on the second team. LEADING THE way was their top linebacker Wayne Kittrel who probably led the world in tackles. This senior was a main cog in one of he best defensive units in the state this past year. Ron Atkinson was also selected as a linebacker on the first team. Many fans overlooked Ron during the year with the efforts of Kittrel Somehow it strikes me funny the way the Utah High School Activities Association selected to classify their members for athletic competition. All they do is take the number of students enrolled and put them in a bracket with other schools that are supposed to be the same size. over.
