Through the use of charts and other visual aids, Sheriff Lawrence told Chamber members that present jail facilities are so overcrowded that some inmates being booked into the County Jail are being housed at other facilities - including Cache County Jail. -- OUR jail population has increased sharply over the last six years from 1,339 in 1971 to 2, 183 in 1976, he said. We have only 38 bunks available in our cells and there is no way we can take care of the prisoners like we should. He explained that the sheriffs office handled 3,563 class one felony cases in Davis County last year of d which nearly (1,003) were major crimes in Bounone-thir- tiful. THEFTS led the long list of offenses, 2,253; followed by burglaries, 970; auto thefts, 153; aggravated assault, 140; robberies, 31; and reported rapes, 15. There was one homicide in the county last year. Sheriff Lawrence said the county sheriffs office serves 125,000 people in Davis HAND CARVED communities and Countys the unincorporated area. Commissioners To Consider Two IFire Trucks levy. The commission was divided on their evaluation of By ROSELYN KIRK Davis County commissioners are undecided about whether to purchase two fire trucks this year for proposed sub-statio- Centerville in and Woods Cross. COMMISSIONER C.E. Moss said the county has the money in the budget, raised through a two mill levy to fire protection, to buy one fire truck this year, but wonders if the county should consider buying the other at the same time, borrowing the money from the general fund. County Clerk Rod Walker said the correct accounting procedure would be to make a loan from the general fund to the special service district which provides fire protection to the unincorporated area of the county south of Farming-to- n and to three cities, Centerville, Woods Cross and whether the county could charge interest on the money loaned to the fire district. Two locations for fire substations are being considered in Centerville and Woods Cross. Those cities have agreed to shelter the vehicles, when purchased, until the county can work out the details of providing a fire substation in each city. The present county fire station is located at 400 North and 500 West in West Bountiful. THE Centerville area is considered a priority problem since many areas in that city are beyond the two mile radius prescribed for fire protection. At one time county commissioners proposed to the two cities that the county supply the vehicle if the cities would donate the land. A decision on how the money n will be raised for the is still under consideration. The cost of the fire stations has been estimated at between $80,000 - $85,000. sub-statio- AT THE end of 1979, that money could be paid back to the general fund, based on money raised through the two months of the budget year," Mr. Walker explained.
