Only in recent years has Davis Countys identity changed, giving way to subdivisions, parking lots and commercial developments. COULD IT be that the challenge of redemption for Davis County is just now beginning? This is a question that Dr. Layton will discuss in the context of Davis Countys history. No county in Utah, and very few in the Intermountain West, have ever experienced the .rapid and sweeping changes that have come to' Davis County during the past generation. From its initial establishment in 1850 until World War II, Davis County has been predominately rural, generally prosperous and home to a stable, homogeneous populace. SINCE WORLD War II the population has increased six fold and the farms have given way to subdivisions, com- mercial developments, parking lots and freeways. Over 20,000 people now commute in and out of the county each day. Not surprisingly, the people of Davis County, particularly those whose roots go back to a previous generation, are reflecting a renewed interest in the countys history.
