SPEAR (D) T. Elton 131. Showing off several ribbons and trophies that he has won in athletic competition is Eric Nalder of Layton. YOUNG ATHLETE Ten year old Eric Nalder is proficient in three sports, but he says he likes football best. Eric was on the second place Cub Scout Layton Stake Olympic team, the Squirt Hockey team and was a defensive lineback on the 70 pound class football team that won first place in the Layton Wasatch Front Football All-St- league. ALTHOUGH football was Erics favorite sport, he hadnt done much kicking until he entered the 1976 Puntt Pass and Kick contest in Lay-to- r. Eric won the zone competition and went on to place third at the District level which was held at Rice Stadium at the University of Utah. Eric, who competed with other 10 year old winners in the state, said he was nervous during the events at Rice Stadium. Winners werent nounced the day of the competition so Eric was surprised when his mother came to school a few days later to tell that he had placed third. DURING the regular foot- ball season, Erics football team, coached by Richard Berri ochoa, won first place in their division and qualified to play in the mini-boplayoffs at Weber College. During the Cub Scout Olympics held this past summer, Erics team, after placing MONEY TO LOAN and Individual or Second First loans. THE OLYMPIC competition, which begins at a ward level with 8, 9, and 10 year old teams, consisted of four bicentennial events. They were the Paul Revere Relay, a 50 yard baton pass-of- f relay, Potomac Throw, the most accurate throw to a designated spot with a frisbe, Minute Man Brigade, carrying a water-fille- d bucket a designated distance without spilling and a timed obstacle course. Erics three member team placed first in the Layton 16th Ward and advanced to the stake competition at Layton High School where they qualified an alternate team in Regional competition. ERIC WAS a natural for hockey since he had been skating since he was in diapers, according to his mother Rebecca Nalder. But it wasnt until 1975 that he played on a Squirt, an 8 to 10 year old team for the Golden Spike Hockey Club. Eric moved from the third line to the first line in one year. He played defense. He traveled with his team to Idaho Falls to play with the team from the Squirt Division. In addition to football and hockey, Eric also plays baseball in the Pioneer League. He also swims and skiis. Eric says hes always been interested in sports and plays with his father Ned and his brother Adam, rk All-St- ar 58, 127 Debbie Fraser, lbs., sophomore from Kays-vill- e has seen double duty as a starter for the junior varsity team and as a reserve for the varsity volleyball team. well, and she has the experience to back it up. He indicated that last year the Vikes had won rather easily over the Fanners and that he felt his players were still thinking about last year when they showed up for the contest The Vikes learned the hard way that to win ball games you have to more than just show up. THIS wasnt the only reason the Vikes were beaten, according to their coach. It was a matter of them not being able to do anything right and their opponents couldnt do anything wrong. They were taking 20 and sometimes 30 foot shots. The sad part of it was that they were making them, coach added. the SO JUST how good is this Viking team that has been picked by the region coaches to win the league this year. Obviously on paper they have the talent necessary to win the title, but titles arent won or lost on paper; its performance on the court that could be a long season. Since the pre-seasresults have been coming in though the experts have the region and many agree that teams given a fighting chance to finish on top. One of the main reasons, definitely the biggest, for the Lancers success and expected high finish is their big post man Joimy Gilbert. The 67 pivot man is considered by thany to be the best player in the region although every school will argue that point. THIS IS Gilberts third year at varsity competition, which in this league is a definite plus. Many teams dont even ha're two players who have any varsity experience. However, in this reporters eyes from observation, the best player that the Lancers have is 63 forward Cal Roberts. Many teams have had the notion to double team the big man in the middle which leaves someone else on the court free. Cal has taken full use of this and is having a tremendous pre season for Coach Doug Moon. in- dividual championships went to Tony Spear in the 132 class and Bart Thompson in the 119 class. ROBERTS IS an excellent defensive player and often draws the opposing teams big scorer for the evening. On any given night Cal is capable of scoring in double figures. Also, with Roberts and Gilbert, THE GUARD situation for the Lancers is the big question mark, many opposing coaches feel that this is the weak spot for Layton. Its obvious that any of the contenders for the starting spots are going to be inexperienced; the quicker they get that needed experience and confidence then, the quicker the Lancers will be better off. Fighting for a starting spot on the guardlines are juniors Ride Snow, Carl Woodward and Ben Bubak. A couple of seniors, however, have the inside tract on the guard slot with Coach Moon looking for help from Bart Weaver and Pete Dennis. Weaver missed much of last year with an injury but has made progress and is starting to play good heady ball. DENNIS, on the other hand, is still nursing an injury which is hampering his quickness which is his main asset.
