This conTaxiing isnt too difficult, but its necessary to keep in mind cluded my first flying lesson. that only the rudder pedals are effective for directing the course of the plane on the ground. The throttle is also used in taxiing to control the forward motion of the aircraft. The wheel is no help at all! I found that out as I attempted to turn to the left by using the wheel. It just didnt work. We stopped about loo feet from the strip and checked all the instruments to make sure everything was operating as it should. The controls were checked to make sura there were no obstructions to hinder their functioning. We checked for planes in the vicinity and taxied onto the runway. I was informed by Mr. Simpson that the plane would take off when it was ready. He told me to push the throttle clear m and to guide the plane straight down the runway, using only slight pressure on the rudder. When I could read 54 mph on the airspeed indicator I was to begin pulling back on the wheel. I did what he told me to and there I was, tearing down the runway. The airspeed indicator read 51 mph and I started pull- ing back on the wheel. I could not believe I had really done it, but there was the ground below me, getting farther and far- -' ther away. Well, maybe flying won't be too bad after all, I thought. I was soon to discover that I had a lot to learn about flying. ,v,r.
