Why not enlist? At a nearby recruiting station, he plowed through the red tape and passed the physical examination except for being three pounds underweight. Army regulations required that an applicant weigh 120 pounds. He tipped the scales at 117 pounds. Noticing his disappointment, the Recruiting Officer gave him a dozen or more bananas and told him to drink all the water he could and come back. This he .did. When he stepped on the scales, it 122 pounds. He was in the Army! The next three years, Charlie served with the Field Artillery stationed in the Hawaiian Islands.
