THE UNKNOWN In March of 1957, a woman came to this clinic suffering from an extremely severe headache. She was so drugged attempting to relieve the headache that her eyes would not focus, but the pain persisted. Her complete case history is too lengthy to include here, but her past symptoms were as follows. She had had 12 major operations in an unsuccessful attempt to alleviate these symptoms. Severe abdominal pain with vomiting of bile, complete loss of equilibrium, sleeping spells, for as long as a week at a time, during which her family would feed her, take1 her to the bathroom, and converse with her. When she awakened she would have no memory of anything which took place during this period. She would feel, to quote her own words, as though she had been drug through the fires of hell. Invariably, when she awakened she would have this unbearable aevere headache. Every five weeks for twenty-thre- e years she had had to have a dilation of the urethra. The neck of the bladder would become unable to pass urine. For Appointment DIAL EX C H I R J F A II II 0 P R skull) and also at coccyx (tail bone). When she awakened sufficiently for them to get a rase history on her, they put her under psychiatric treatment. They felt that surely anyone with such an unexplainable set of symptoms as these, and who did not respond to any type of treatment including the twelve major operations must surely be a mental case or at least a hypochondriac. After thorough investigation, the psychiatrist reported her as being a perfectly normal, well balanced, well integrated person so far as her mental processes were concerned and that the cause of her illnesses lay somewhere other than in her mind.
