Here are the facts and figures compiled by the Tax Foundation, Inc., a public tax research group. This research started with a grocery store on Pulaski Road in Chicago. The grocer paid 14 federal, state and local taxes. The trucker who delivered the eggs paid 20 taxes in all. The egg wholesaler paid 17 taxes. The wholesaler bought the eggs from a Minnesota farmer who brought them to Chicago in his own truck, and the farmer paid 10 different taxes. The. small Minnesota feed store sold the farmer his poultry feed and he paid 14 different taxes. Hie railroad that delivered the feed to the feed store paid another 11 taxes including state and levies in both Minnesota and Iowa. The corporation that milled the poultry feed paid 14 taxes including some new ones like stamp taxes on the corporation security transfers and an Iowa grain-han- d ling tax. Add these all up and you have 100 taxes on that egg. And these are not alL How about the taxes paid by labor on these different jobs and the sales tax r on tools, etc? Neither does it cover the taxes on that grew the feed before it arrived at the mill, nor the fertilizer companies and the farm equipment manufacturers. How about the taxes on light bolba, refrigeration. weighing and food handling equipment? All these people contributed to the production of that egg. The 100 taxes mentioned above covers only those firms and the one farmer that directly had something to do with the production of the egg. The surprising thing Is that there has been no way found to tax the hen which is the real producer. Of course, the fanner pays taxes on his hen but Henrietta herself is at the bottom of this tax pyramid and is the only one that can thumb 6er nose at the tax collector. Three Cheers for Henrietta. And the sad part is that with all these 100 taxes on the egg, with the present low price on eggs and the high cost of feed the farmer is operating his hen house at a loss.
