Most of our time is spent with intelligence officers in an effort to find out the cause of the fire, and other details about the whole affair. They take down every thing we say in shorthand then we sign our names to the record. This is the story: We took off from Alexandria, Louisiana at 7 p. m., January .1, on a long range mission for Big navigation Texas. The same goal Springs, of our last mission when we were grounded here. The ship was a new one, the best on the field. At 8:45 p. m. I was in the radio room with the radio operator and our came tail gunner. The into the radio room and was there about three minutes before he went into the waist after a few minutes the right waist gunner came up into the radio room saying he could smell smoke. We are looked for fire. No one could find opened the any ,untilthe radio room hatch. There was what appeared to be a furnace just under the upper turret. He said, Oh My God! and with the fire extinguisher ran right through the fire. He had left his chute up in his seat we didnt see him again until we were on the ground. The fire was right in the oxygen bottles and between the huge gasoline tanks in the wings and we were aware of the danger, so we all put on our chutes. In the excitement, I got mine on upside down, but changed it in no time. We received no warning from the pilot by buzzer or telephone. The fire had burned out. the system. We all tried t put put the fire and called the pilot. The fluid in the fire extinguisher made a poisonous" gas which hurt our lyes phosgene, and lungs but our lower ball man managed, to get far enough .up into the bomb bays to discover that the pilots seat was empty We needed no other signal back we went to the waist hatch to jump. Everyone was surpriscalm. The radio operator ingly went first. I was right behind him, but paused a moment to say a prayer after my chute opened I could see the 17 in flames in the distance, fire bursting from her wings and out of her belly. It was a calm clear, cold night The stars were out and a gusty wind or breeze would hit my chute and break the Death like" silence.. It seemed to take hours to come down, actually about 10 minutes (s.5oo ft.). I tried to see the other chutes, but I couldnt.
