It has come.to be a common occurrence, in the local courts, to impose light fine upon gross offenders. Now and then, in a spasmodic gesture of justice,1 a traffic killer is sent to Jail. Specific instance! f leniency, of lack of uniformity in punishment, as taken from' the court record, form an indict ment against the system which should bring the blush of shame to a metropolitan community. . It should not be necessary to return to the days of the vigilantes to rouse public conscience and to impress upon our courts the vital necessity for drastic action to put a stop to traffic slaughter. Certainly, we may not expect our courta to become severe If the people are Indifferent; we may not look fo juries to regard manslaughter as a serious offense when the courts themselves assume an easy attitude toward palpable offenders. When, a drunken killer roams the streets or highways recklessly and eventually kills someone, it is looked upon as involuntary manslaughter, punishable by any sort of mild sentence which a complacent court or jury is able to recommend. What should never be regarded, as 'extenuating' circumstances are sought in a systematic effort to lighten the force of tha law's hand. Pep Assembly Friday An extremely interesting pep assembly was given Friday to prepare the students for the game with Logan Saturday. Representatives, one from each class, gave their views on the outcome of the game. Mr. Robinson also gave a pep. speech. -- Beth Evans, Erma Sheffield and Beatrice Call presented a little stunt in which Davis and Logan were both suitors of a fair damsel, Victory. Of course, they had to fight it out, and the result was that Logan was completely knocked out, and Davis gained Vic tory. Although the sport editors predicted a victory for Logan, this little act was a representation of what really came to pass. . Harvest Dance Held . . The F. F. A. and H. E. C. staged an advertisement in Friday's assembly for their Harvest ball held Friday night. The gymnasium was decorated for the occasion with autumn leaves, At the dance pumpkin pie and apple cider were sold.
