The telephone situation in northern Davie county U well nisrh intolerable at this, time.. The grrrat number ot party line which exist over the north end of the county and the prolonged inconsequential conversation which is carried on not only by phone subscribers but also by neighbors who are net subscribers using phones, renders the service, at times, almost worthless for business purposes. This already exasperating condition has lately been added to by changes in a great many of the phone numbers, although the changes are not shown in the directory, the last of which was printed from copy which closed August 10, 1921. It is indeed surprising that this change in numbers should be made before the issuance of a new directory. It would seem that the conditions now existing should he taken up by the public utilities commission. Telephone sendee is one of our greatest utilities, and is of more importance to the commercial world for the rapid transaction of business thai any other of the utilities. The matter of prolonged conversations over the telephone on inconsequential subject is hard to correct. It is only through education, in the use of the telephone and the recognition of the rights of others who are seeking its use that this condition can be remedied. But there is certainly no reason for the change of phone numbers without providing subscribers with directories showing such changes. It would be posible to Issue telephone directories on time were It not for the fact that the directory is used almost os much of an advertising scheme as it is used for a telephone directory. The telephone company, by the way, does not issue its directory, but contracts for the same with the National Telephone Directory company, a concern which is more interested in selling advertlsingspace than in rendering service to telephone subscriber. This is also a matter which might properly be put before the utilities commission. FREIGHT AND TRICES Freight rates on farm products in carload lots will he reduced 10 per cent at once. It would, b lutcrenting to know where this 10 per cent goes to the farmer, the wholesalers, the manufacturers and packers, the retailers, or the consumers. Our guess it that it will be used up before it gets to the consumers. But the exact facts will.be impossible to t discover. A 10 per cent freight reduction on unloads of wheat, for instance, will have a direct relation to the wages the railroads can, afford to pay. But its relation to the price of a single loaf of bread will le infinitesimal. There are too many other factors that have to be taken into consideration.
