A. Epparaan, Na. Aw OBSERVATIONS, REFLECTIONS AND DEDUCTIONS This story has to do with a trip from Kaysvilla to Fish Lake. Fish Lake is an ancient crater lake, located in the southeast corner of Sevier county, .way up .on the top of the Wasatch range at an altitude of 8,500 feet above sea level. The lake is six or seven miles long, about a mile and a half wide and from a few inches to several hundred feet deep. The lake is the home of several varities of game fish and there are millions of them. A great spring of ice cold water bursts from the base of the mountain which Hanks Die lake on the north, in sufficient volume to operate a hydroelectric plant which generates light for the resort situate on the north side of the lake about a mile from the south end. The trip was made by auto and was one continued round of pleasure f rom beginning to end. The course may be said to be directly south at all times' until Sigurd is reached. Sigurd ia directly south of Kaysville a distance of about 190 miles and Is at the intersection of the Arrowhead trail and the State road which leads to Banks ville in Wayne county, but a few miles from the Colorado river. The route to Sigurd leads through the heart of Utah and reveals to a very great extent the source of her wealth and prosperity. First the road leads through the fields, orchards and gardens of Davis county into Salt Lake City and thence south to the Point of the Mountain through Jordan Narrows. Away to the west are seen the mountains which hold the great mines of copper, sil ver and gold at Bingham, Untie and Eureka; on the east the precipitous mountains hold the great mines of the Big and Little Cottonwood creeks, the marble quarries of Mount Nebo, the plaster quarries of Nephi from which the San Francisco exposition obtained her hundreds of cars of plaster, the - great plaster deposits at Sigurd, the home of the famous Jumbo plaster plant. All day long the speeding ma chine skirts the range of mountains which holds the precious and semi- precious minerals and metals which add millions annually to the wealth of Utah and the nation while to the east over the divide, are the greatest deposits of coal and hydrocarbons in the known world. The ' route Is through a. succession of valleys, each with its own water supply both or culinary use and irrigation. The soil of these valleys is universally fertile and today crops of sugar beets, wheat, oats, barley, potatoes and fruit, unsurpassed In the world, are growing, maturing and being harvested, each in its turn. As viewed from the crests of divides, which separate these val leys, the talk of food shortage seems a joke. As one speeds along through this landscape garden the fields seem to shout plenty and to spare!, plenty and to spare! The roads have been well built, well grnded and in places surfaced with road material. The bridges are usually good and irrigation water as a rule kept off The roadwayr The-clti- ei and towsn can be located from afar by the great number of shade trees, the streets always join at right angles and are wide. In most instances the pioneers builded well and surrounded their homes with orchards and ornamental trees," most of which are still as vigorous as were the hands which planted them. On leaving the valley of Sevier the road leads through canyons, along ridges and over divides until the mountains slope to the Colorado river. At time the prospect is glorious and Interesting. From the heights the cultivated fields look like giant mosaics set in many colors, laced with streams of silvery irrigation water; while in the far distance range after range of blue and purple mountains bound Die landscape. The sunlight is brilliant, the sky the bluest blue, crests are wooded with aspen and spruce of the brightest green, sage parks are dotted with cedar and pinon, and crystal streams race away to the rivers which fall into basin sinks or the rivers which flow to the sea. From the state road ,a few miles above Loa, the county seat of Wayne county, a ridge road leads to Fish lake. The distance from the intersection is ten miles. At times the road is good and at times about as bad as lava and granite boulders can make it. The lake is sometimes called the fishermans paradise, and is well named. As compared with such' well known resorts as Lake Tahoe, of California, sportsmen who Rave fished in the waters of both award the palm to Fish lake. Native trout, eastern brook, rainbow, steelhead and Mackinaw predominate. Carp and suckers are unknown in its waters and y the size ranges from a few ounces for the d lawful fish to- the Mackinaw. It is a poor fisherman who cannot be satisfied with his catch and experts get their lawful limit of twenty, pounds and one fish in a few hours, often the one fish weighing six to eight pounds. The resorts are provided with two hotels and camp and the accommoda tions are such that sportsmen can he fairly comfortable. , In closing our observations we will say the trip is great, the fishing is great and we would advise our friends to take the trip and get a new grip on life. Reflections As this story had its' inception in a trip to Fish lake it is proper to first consider that grand resort. First and foremost, why is it not better known ? Lake Tahoe has a worldwide reputation and is the acknowledged playground of coast Californians and al-wa- ys twenty-five-poun- tire-cutti- ng " tl& most talked of community along highway. Tim road the through Davis county will soon be a link of the Pikes Peak trail and-thMidland trail, and it is only a matter of time when the Lincoln highway will change tt route from the south to the north of the lake through Davis coast-to-coa- st' e county. i But if for no other reason, Davis county should paint up or tear down for her own good and for her own satisfaction. Let every town and community in Davis county organize its club. Let us paint up every building and fence worth painting. If the building log, brick or adobe, paint &e roof, windows and doors. ' The - lack painted buildings is the most noticeable feature of the Utah landscape. Leaving buildings' unpainted is just as wastefuTas leaving farnT machinery standing where used in the field until again required for use. Then why not paint up if for no other reason than to save the buildings? For barns, outbuildings and roofs, g machines could be used and the expense of painting such buildings would be little more than the cost of material. Freight cars and factories are painted by this method. Let every city and town and community in Davis county organize a club, the mem- AN ELECTRIC RANGE paint-sprayin- WORK SAVES in the cooking and atill more In the cleaning up. It is not presumed that everyone will join the club but get as many members as possible and pledge each member to paint all structures worth saving or tear them down. All old building material has a value in the erection of new buildings or as fuel. The land on Which they stand is also valuable. If the majority of the people go into the clubs and paint up or' tear down, others will be shamed into doing likewise. Davis to county up six-in- - the resort of sportsmen from all over the United States and Europe. The setting of Fish lake Is just as grand as the noted California resort and the fishing superior. Its accommodations as to hotels and camps are not to be considered by way of comparison. The road from the State road to the lake is a trail which brings joy to the heart of the tire dealer and the machine tinkerer. The State road has been well constructed and then has been left to care for itself. The United States forestry department and the fish and game department of the state have taken charge of the lake and the country thereabouts. The hundreds of autos which belong principally to citizens in the southern portion of the state, contribute an annual license to the state, and each fisherman carries a paid license in his pocket, and yet the Toad will not compare with the average neighborhood road. So much for the lake and the road leading thereto. The lack of care to the valley roads is also a source of reflection. They have been built but have apparently been left to care for themselvea. Furrows plowed up by machines in muddy weather zigzag the crest of the highway, ruts and chug holes remain open and are getting wider and deeper each day. The valleys traversed by the road are the richest in the world but thousands and thousands of acres of the richest land has become waterlogged by excessive irrigation. $nd is in need of drainage. Natural marsh land, now used for pasture, in great bodies, could be reclaimed by drainage and made to produce abundantly, On every hand the lack of labor lor the fields is apparent Overripe alfalfa was constantly observed, cocked hay was seen standing in second crop a foot high, beet fields were in need of cultivation and irrigation, irrigation dtlches were obstructed and water being wasted. Bumper crops of grain were constantly observed alongside of crop failures. Deductions ' were the excuses for poor Many road conditions, weedy beet fields, delayed farm work, waterlogged lands, and all of the shortcomings complained of.
