Dear Mr. Davis: Referring to the article published in the Power County News under date of Oct. 4. In justice to the state Liberty loan committee and to you as chairman of the committee during the second and third liberty loan campaigns, we believe a statement of facta is due from us. . We do not care to dispute nor deny the figures given in the above mentioned article, but will confine our statement u to the actual facts and figures. . The expense incurred during the second campaign waa $1999.10. This was he exact amount expended by the and for which the federal reserve bank at San cisco reimbursed the committee. . nt known for many months that the unscrupulous leaders, of the Nonparti-a- a Power Trust, BUT League would endeavor to connect me with the MOWING THAT THE CONTRACT WHICH I HAD MADE WITH SENATOR RADY WAS FOUNDED ON A VALID CONSIDERATION, WAS FAIR, JUST AND HONEST, 1 MADE NO EFFORT WHATSOEVER TO CONCEAL THE SAME, BUT ON THE OTHER HAND, IN VIEW OF THE ACTION OF THE WWER COMPANY IN DISCONTINUING THE SERVICE SINCE THIS AT-AC-K HAS BEEN MADE UPON ME, I HAVE INSTITUTED SUIT TO VINDICATE MY CONTRACT RIGHTS. . . - ANYONE Foul Strike 2 1 have Aa an d f ' Non-partis- wolf-lik- - MERELY CREDITOR OF THE COMPANY A Non-Partis- contract which 1 entered into with' Senator Brady was fair.' Oregon, in contrast, spent $16,000.00, with the approval of Aa all citizens know, ed Non-partis- . , hard-mind- ' government. Now these leaders art repeating' the League , libelous statement that I personally profited by the drive. Thia I; League, outrageous falsehood was circulated by the leaders during The fourth liberty loan drive, and the Idaho-loaCJ, 1 committee, feeling that the circulation of this false report wa interfering with the drive, made a statement which dissipated the e suspicions 'being aroused against the loan campaign, and also i M these Again, with characteristic mafevcleuce and cunning League leaders attempted to discredit me because as a buildcompletely exonerated me. I , , STATE OF IDAHO,) County of A ad. )SS. ( M. E. HUGHES, being. first duly sworn, depoees and says: , I am now a resident of Pocatello; Idaho, but carry oil my bust, ness at Mountain Home, Idaho, where I am the president of the Community Farms company and in that capacity am managing the cultivation, farming and improvement of aboutil.OSO acres. I am also acting as secretary i of the IrMountain Homf rigation company, a private iri about rtgation system irrigating (.000 acres of land in the vicinity of Mountain Home. To these entime terprises 1 now give my sole and attention: I am 1; no way- -, or In or interested employed by with the Idaho Power company. I was the vice president and general manager of the Idaho Consolidated Power company, with Us general offices In Poca0S to Septello, Idaho, from tember, lilt. . This power company generated electricity at American Falls and distributed ft throughout southeastern Idaho, including aa one of Its markets tbe town of American Falla The company was owned by the late Senator Bradv, and I was closely yissoclated with him from the year ,T907 until hta death. Tho Idaho Power company la now the owner and operator of the American Falla generating plant and the eystem of trunamimion and distribution connected therewith. I acted aa the manager for Idaho for thia power company until May 1. 117, at which time I took up other employment. I know D. W. Qavts of American Falla Idaho, and have been acquainted with him ever .since I became connected with Senator Brady. Mr. Da via waa running a bank at American Falla when I became eoquained with him. end eouth-eaete- m Vas engaged exclusively in carrying on business enterprise. He with , Senator was associated Brady In business and was his close persona friend prior to Mr. Brady's election as governor of the fttate of Idahou I know that., Mr. Davis gave considerable time and attention to looking after the interests of Senator business in Brady while he waa absent Boise acting as governor or the state of Idaho, and while the senator eras absent in Washington In the United States senate, , It was pot an uncommon thing for Senator Brady to authorise the furnishing of free' eerrlee, ssmbtr and I now recoil that American Fall of, firms In service, free among them being Phllbriet M Greenwood, and the American Falls company, which had five years free eerrioe for its city (Political Advertisement) waterworks pumping plant; the Remington hotel, which was furnished free service for a number of ' pen for a large electric sign; (Campbell A Stebbins, who had five yen nf free service for their . large mercantile institution, ms did also their weeamon the Evans Mercantile company. Not only was free service f nmirihed to tbe American Falls Tanning com. pany, bat also a building site was donated. There are others that I cannot now recall. 0. W. Davis was also famished electricity his homo only, and he probably had, less electricity famished to' him than the others whom I have mentioned. Service was granted to him In 111. tinder a special contract with Senator Brady himself. My first notice of it waa the receipt of a letter from Senator Brady, s ho waa then living in Boise after his Serm of office as governor had expired. It sqoma that be bad recently purchased an interest In the First National bank, of American Falls, of which' Mr. Davis was president, and .he waa alacv elected as a director and as , vice president of the bank. Mr. Davis had rendered considerable business service to Senator Brady, and in consideration therefor and for, as I understand, further attention to be given by Mr. Da via to Senator Bradys business inat his terests, electrical service home for a period of -- 10 years was granted In MV. Davla Ac- cordingly, from the receipt of that letter on. no specific charge was made against Mr. Davis. I never raised any question about the right of Mr. Davis to receive this service, and never took the matter up with the officials of ' the Idaho Powvr pnsnpany. Even after I became manager of southeastern Rlal for that rqn- corn I took .it for granted, and I - still beHrved that Mr.- - Davis was under a valid contract and agree that mrat with Nmalor Brady; tmsi-ness ha bad rendered valuable services which, to my knowledge, were worth a great deal more than an ftrrtrinal service that could be furaMied to him for a greater period of years Umn Mr. Davis coaid possibly tire, and that this contract cnuld not bo evaded by the power company simply because Prnator Brady had sold Ms Interests. It never occurred to me that whatever emild any question arise that Mr pavis was receiving anvthing that he had not a clear right to receive under his con- tract with Bebator Brady. I cannot yet ee why the power company should be specially favored at tbe expense of Mr. Davis by being allowed to evade performance of the contract that was made fairly and openly before (he public adliUes commission ex- CHARLES M.
