He assured that medical practices at DMC require the use of only sterile disposable drawing equipment, so the donor can feel secure in knowing that no contamination will take place. The second issue involves what is knows as an autologous donation - that is, having blood drawn for use in ones own future scheduled surgery. Indicating that this can be a legitimate option for people concerned about any risks from using blood supplied from the Blood Bank, Prisbrey explained that it does require a physicians order and the proper lead time for recovery before surgery. While all blood drawn at DMC and other facilities is now routinely screened for AIDS and Hepatitis, a minute risk factor is still present, and for those individuals who are concerned, autologous donation is a service that we provide. In fact, weve seen a seven-fol- d increase in this option in the last year. religious organizations. Commenting about the general impact of AIDS on the Blood Bank, Prisbrey noted that two issues require clarification. Contraiy to what Schooigets use permit ST. That local concern and the excellent response the community has provided to date keeps him optimistic, he said. Well weather the slump if people in ourcommumity just stop and think and respond like they always have in the past, he concluded. Community members who wish to donate blood may do so on any Thursday at the regular times, and may call the Hospital Blood Bank to have any questions answered. 490 LB.
