The reception of the foremost French airmen at the Salt Lake tabernacle last night with a fitting program was well received by Coste and Bellonte. Such a welcome as Salt Lake and Utah gave the fliers was only typical of what has been the greeting accorded them wherever they have gone about the United States since landing on Uncle Sams eastern shore from over a great ocean and from a great nation. Mayor Bowman of Salt Lake, In greeting and welcoming the birdmen, spoke of the friendly and peaceful relations maintaining between France and the United States for more than a century and a halfand, of how this memorable, flight should continue to cement more strongly the friendly ties that bind the two nations. Lindbergh went to Paris, received the plaudits of throngs Waiting long to welcome him at Le Bqurget field, Paris, and now after many trials and failures, but always with a strong, undving spirit of carrying on, French fliers have returned p flight, the first Lindberghs visit to France with a recorded one, from Paris to New York. Utah has been happy to fall in line with other states in welcoming Coste and Bellonte within its borders. If these fearless men carry back with them across the sea not only the acclaim of this nation, but take with them the thought and feeling that Utah has done her bit to make them happy in having visited the state, and if they carry away with them a warm memory of hospitality here, of the industry, progress and thriftiness of those who live in Utah, this commonwealth will be more than repaid for the efforts expended in showing honor to two such deserving heroes as Dieudonne Coste and Maurice Bellonte. If such relations could maintain between nations in diplomatic dealings as do always between the men of science, art, literature, and airmen as individuals not bound by military codes, wars would soon and easily be relegated to the realm of oblivion where they belong. i trans-Atlant- ic non-sto- RESTRICTING IMMIGRATION federal government has taken steps to restrict, for present anyway, the immigration of foreigners who might become public charges if they came to this country, at a time when there is considerable unemployment. Mexican immigration, for instance, was reduced to 324 for the month of July. There is no use in letting people into the country who are likely to be added to the number of unemployed. There are too many such now. Thi5 action does not settle the question of the many immigrants who are slipping into the country illegally. Far too many1 have thus evaded our laws and made a joke of our government. Business is likely to be good in the near future, and our country may be able soon to take in the full quotas to which the various nations are entitled. A certain number of industrious immigrants can be welcomed in good times, but never again will Uncle Sam receive the old time flood of aliens. Stern Ban on Women Mount Athos on the Macedonian coast of the Aegean aea is known as the land without women. This holy mountain has. since he early dajff of Christianity, been the retreat of monks and no women have lhed there. 4 The pursuit of the unknown in disease causation and cure' leads the research physican into the realms of all sciences. As a sample, let us consider the cancer problem. Cancer is a disease affecting primarily the older age groups, and although cancer in the young is known, it is believed to be a special type associated with irregularities in development. The vast majority of cancers are found in those forty-fiv- e years of ago and over. To account for the prevalence of the disease among the older age groups, a number of hypotheses have been postulated. One has won much favor. It maintains that cancer is more common among the older groups for the reason that their body cells are not as vital as those of the young, and hence are less able " to resist the, causative agent; of cancer. . , I However, in 1916 Professor Yamagiva of or. iaoo oftLoswg University of Tokio demonstrated that true skin concer could be produced on the ears of rabbits by painting the skin with crude tar once every few days for several months. Careful studies later were conducted on the time elapsing between the infliction of the injury and the development of the cancerous growth. Experiments with mice proved that cancer never developed in less than four months from the time of the first application of crude tar. Four months in the life span of the mouse corresponds to approximately ten to fifteen years in the life spar, of man. In a parallel manner it was found that industrial cancer seldom develops in less than ten years from the entrance of the sufferer into the responsible industry. The body cells of the older person do not therefore appear to be less resistant than the younger cells, but it does appear as if concer were the result of long and sustained irritation. j Those Useful Wires I you have a smart wife, use her. b may have the brains in your American Magazine. jatsSly.
