Fullerton, Jr, Associated Press Sports Writer By nis brilliant work as substitute fpr old hoss Riggs Stephenson, young Danny Taylor has just about won himself a regular place in the Chicago Cubs outfield. Taylor, who finished the Cubs triumph over Brooklyn a week ago by driving in the winning run in the final game, did the same thing to the NOw York Giants yesterday in a more sensational fashion and put Chicago five full games ahead in the National, league pennant struggle with a 3 to 2 triumph. Taylor stole home in the ninth inning when the score was tjed, the bases full, two men out and two strikes on the batter. "The Giants went ahead when Otts double and Hogans single produced a run in the second inning. The Cubs forged ahead in the fourth as Wilson 'singled, Taylor advanced him with a double and Hartnett brought with a sharp single. In the ninth Terry and Ott singled m succession and the former scored as OFarrell hit into a double play. The fourth place St. Louis Cardinals placed themselves only one game behind the Robins, who were idle due to rain, by. winning a double-headfrom the Phillies, 9 to both-hom- e er and,6 to 4. The Pittsburgh Pirates extended their series of triumphs 4 to seven games by defeating Cincinnati in the .tirst game, 9 to 6,. but it was broken in the second game when Ray JKolp had tne better of a duel with Steve Swetonic by a 2 to 0 count. Opening their new series against the eastern clubs of the America-n- league, Wash1 ington trounced Philadelphia, 7 to 3, and reduced the leaders margin of 7 12 games. A four-ru- n rally m the sixth inning .decided the game. The New York Yankees fell further back in their place as they divided a hard-fougdoubleheader with the Cleveland Indians. The Yanks won the first, game, 5 to 3, in 11 innings. Wes Ferrell hurled his 22nd victory for the Indians and his eleventh in succession in the second game, allowing the Yanks only six hits for a 4 to 2 triumph. The St. Louis Browns checked Farl WhitehiUs senes of pitching successes at 11 when they pounded him for 13 hits in eight innings and defeated Detroit, 7 to 6. The- - Chicago Sox ..remained virtually a White led" with the Browns in the standing as they split a pair of pitchers battles with , the Boston Red Sox. Boston won the first game, 2 to 0, but Chicago gained a 5 to 4 victory m the 11 inning - second clash. , a FOR-WESTER- Battle on which to contemplate their thrilling 3 to 2 victo--y over the Giants yesterday but they did not need it any more than 300 policemen who battled to handle the crowd at Wrigley Field.
