This germ had been found in the blood and bodies of chickens dying from this malady. The immediate problem was definitely to establish that the suspected germ really was the sole cause of chicken cholera, and to dis-cover, if possible, some way to overcome the ravages of the malady. By cultivating the germ and feeding it to chickens Lhe first problem, that of the relation of the germ to the disease, was ttled. For Pasteur found that the germ was so deadly to iwls that even a few would invariably-kilthe bird. But the second problem, that of overcoming the disease, tfflcd Pasteur. Then he took one of his forced vacations. hen he'retumed to his laboratory he began work where he id left off. He returned to his old cultures. He found, how- ,er, that they no longer killed the birds. Pasteur reasoned the cultures had gone stale, and he dtivated new ones. Pasteur reasoned that the introduction of the stale or eakened germs into the bodies of the birds must affect in une way their resistance to the disease. Did not this accident iow 'him the way in which to overcome the disease? urther experimentation proved that it did. Pasteur thus demonstrated to the world the use of u.cines in disease, for the stale culture was in effect nothing ' it a vaccine. Since then many more vaccines have been discovered inch have proved helpful. Principal arriong these are the iccines against anthrax, typhoid, and hydrophobia. I' (ford, extension poultry specialist for the Colorado Agricultural college. One quart of water glass Is mixed with nine quarts of water for preserving ten to fifteen dozen eggs. Only clean, fresh eggs free from cracks should be preserved In water glass. Kggs with soiled shells should never be washed and used for storage. Infertile eggs are preferable whenever they can be secured. Here are the directions: 1. Use a earthen Jar, well scalded. 2. Itoil water and allow It to cool. 3. Mix water glass and boiled water-iproportions of one to nine, as given above. 4. Place eggs in jar and keep covered with at least two inches of water glass solution. If one does not have enough eggs to fill tjie Jar at one time, additional eggs stay he added at any time and more solution poured over them. 5. Cover Jar when full and place in a cool location. The quality of the eggs removed from the preservative will depend upon their condition and quality when put down. They will aerve the purpose of strictly fresh eggs for all household uses, but for boiling, the shell should be pricked with a needle as the preservative seals all pores on the egg shell, which prevents the escape of gases when boiling. The eggs should be washed before using to remove the white deposit that forms on them. One should never use an old solution for a new batch of eggs. n Things Wa Don't San So many of us go through the day nnd hardly notice the sparkle of sunlight on n take or goblet, the majestic angles cast by a skyscraper or a picket fence, the grace of a dandelion turned white nnd flnffy. of a gray road winding over a hill.
