There is also provision for a state district school and a state high school fund. There comes also the attempt to increase the present state appropriation of $25 per capita child of school age by the addition of $5 to come from various tax moneys raised under the sections of the new amendment. The present state board of equalization would be abolished, if the amendment stood in place of the now operative Article 13, In the place o fthis board would be a state tax commission, nonpartisan, and comprising four members appointed by the governor with the concurrence of the state legislature. Much power is placed in the hands of this tax commission, under the new amendment. They are empowered to act as an advisory board, to review tax questions, pass upon disputes, equalize assessment valu.s.Mmd.iilfeiUACOnJtnebdaUons to the state legislature from time to time. In the event that the tax revisers succeed in putting into operation a new tax system in Utah to replace the one now existing under Article 13, much may be accomplished in the fright direction of adjusting and equalizing tax burdens which hav long stood as unfair to certain classes, excessive in some instances and too light in others, and the object of many squabbles, falsifications, and evasions. her. r 1 : 'A Chapter 12 GOES CALLING CHASE tha gray car sped along the Milton road on Us trip to Litchfield Obadiah Evans waved to Jim, Bitting behind the wheel. The agitation for early Christmas buying has somewhat distributed the strain created by the old holiday rush. But holiday buying has so greatly increased, that store clerks, postal employes, and others who handle this rush, probably have just as hard a time a ever for a week or twobefore the holiday. The way the American people have piled work on these folks has been simply inhuman. It is all done thoughtlessly, but none the less it has been grossly inconsiderate. For hundreds of thousands of them, the week before the holiday is a period of intense strain from which they may not recover for weeks. Some always get" sic k from overwork. There are plenty of perfectly good reasons why it is for the interest of all of us to buy and send this merchandise early. But let us here in Logan consider also an unselfish motive, and in the spirit of friendliness which should characterize the Christmas season, try to make this holiday one of happiness for all who have to handle the gift business. If we will but start in at once to do our buying, and get the presents off at a very early date, we will have done our share to bring peace and good will to a lot of,.people who prev iouslyy have not had it. THIRTY YEARS AGO froDAY From the Files of The Journal About $92,000 in taxes have been paid to Treasurer Hendricks thus far, and todays receipts will likely swell the amount to about $100,000, leaving something like $12,000 to be paid. In accordace with the instructions of the Postmaster General the Logan postoffice, in connection with every other postoffice throughout the United States, will be closed today from 2 until 4 m. in honor of Vice President Hobart whose funeral will occur between those hours.
