' VARIOUS KINDS OF GROWTH the towns in Utah are earnestly desirous of making community gains, of attracting more population and .gaining more business and trade and keeping well up with mod-.eadvantages. Our people here in Logan share that sentiment very strongly, so it is important to consider what kind of gains ,we wish to concentrate tipon. In some communities, the boosters seem eager for population .growth more than anything else. Any kind of a new industry is ; welcome, even if it employed the rawest kind of unskilled labor. '.Anything that will enable them to take a higher position in the 'census of 1930 will be thankfully accepted, v But there are many towns that are not so eager for growth in 'quantity as in ouality. They want to see business more successful, so that better wages can be paid, which means that people cap improve their homes, and so that the people can easily afford to pay more taxes and contribute by private subscription to "needed improvements. ' They are anxious for more beautiful home grounds, more and better kept parks and playgrounds, better schoolhouses, more jgenerous support of schools, apublic library if the same is lacking. A town might make very remarkable gains along such lines, even if it did not succeed in any rapid population growth. As a usual thing, population growth does bring some or .many of these gains, because there are more people to bear the burdens. But thef two most important things are to promote the spirit of taste and care among the citizens that shall encourage beauty and order, and to promote business enterprise, which OST of m . i , shall lead to energetic measures to develop trade. A town .where these ideas prevail is going to make itself very attrac-tiv- e to the most intelligent and successful people.
