People will cleah up the more exposed portion of their grounds to a cer tain extent, but ip man cases 'their back yards are hopeless masses of litter As these back yards are usually visible to the neighbors and often to passers in the Btreet, these habits are a ' blot on most towns A great many people seem to regard their back yards as a ONfi kind of Wastebasket where every kind of household refuse can be deposited, with results destructive of the beauty of their . ' , neighborhood. A a you ride through towns on railroads, a large part of the back yards that abut on the tracks have this frowzy appear ance. A good many of these people keep chickens, and they are apt to house them In unpainted and tumble down sheds that have a most depressing appearance. They would probably say that these birds are bound to make disorder, but they can be kept in an orderly way if people Value neatness. A thoroughly heat.famlly will put ft flock of chickens in their back yards, put up neatly painted houses for them, pen them in with neat fences, the posts and rails of which are well painted. The Chiekehs in such quarters make a pretty sight with their colored feathers, and the whole outfit is pleasing and suggests thrift. People should have too much seif respect to maintain ugly back yards. If they Want to make a favorable impression in their home towns, and create an impression of thrift and substantial character, one of the first things they need to do is to maintain attractive grounds, and to care'fof their back yards as neatly as for their front lawns.
