Governor 'Alfred E. Smith has passed his first big test 'of strengthen- - therace for the nomination at the Houston convention. Herbert Hoover, who, like the New York executive, is show- ing his heels to his opponents in the fight for the Republican nomination at Kansas City, has further advanced his lead by winning the 29 delegates in his home state, and stimulated the hopes of his supporters by polling a tremendous vote. In bagging Californias 26 votes, Smith convention brought his claimed delegate total up to 494, or 239 12 snort of the two thirds necessary to nominate. His claims to 70, however, are disputed. The balloting brought the total Democratic delegates select ed thus far to 670, or 63 less than the two third major ity, and leaves 430 to be chosen, with Virginias convention, the last on the calendar, set for June 21. The 29 Hoover gained boosted his total claimed delegates to 396, or 149 less than the required majority of 545, His claims to 158 delegates are dis- nearest opponent, Euted. His claims 239 of which 66 are not conceded by his opponents, Republican' delegates selected to date number 835, with 254 to be chosen, the last being the 29 19 in West Virginia May , when Hoover and Senator Goff of that state, fight it out in the primary. the In an effort to clinch nomination for Smith in the minds of the voters, his supporters had , been straining every, nerve for victory in Car ifornia, and some of his more eager lieutenants had intimated a win there mfght be the Bignaljfor.a cry.for his nomjnaacclamation tion by They had claimed that if the governor won in that state and euffererd no setbacks between now and June 26 he would be in a fair way to corral the nomination on the first ballot. Or at most, within three ballots. As they size up the situatfavorite sons will ion1 now, be placed in nomination, but if Smith, during the roll call, polls more than a majority, some of these favorite son delegations not unfriendly to him wijl bs ready to switch before the result is announced, making it a , victory on the first ballot. There are indications, however, that seme deegations, if this move is attempted, might stand fast in opposition to Smith. 1-- 2 - , major issue in the presidential campaign, the committee on temand public perance, prohibition morals at the Methodist Episcopal conference here has demanded a bone dry plank in the platform of all national partiesIn a session , preliminary to drafting their report for submission1 to the conferenee. officers of the temperance board served notice that dry candidates would be demanded and that their organization would be in the thick of the fight to obtain such nominees. A demand was made by Clarence True Wilson, general secretary of the board, that voters he told exactly how all candidates stand on the prohibition law. While Mr. Wilson did not mention tile name of any presidential candidate, R. V. Johnson, field se cretary, said the board opposed of the nomination Governor Smith of Hew York and Senator James A. Reed of Misscouri. We stand opposed to Governor Smith, he said, because he is wet. He has shown that he disregards his oath of office and is a nullifier of his countrys constitution. Prohibition is the vital issue of this political campaign, Senator Reeds statements that it is not to the contrary. If Reed had renowned himself by constructive leadership as much as he has by his bit ing, sarcastic statements, he would be listened to with more confidence. The Democrats and Republicans alike must face prohibition fearlessly and sincerely If they expect to maintain the confidence of the American people. A prohibition enforcement plank must be written Into each partys: platform so 'hot dry that a wet would sizzle if he tried to stand upon it. - boys who CITY According to nil OFFICES the arranged schedule for Boys week, this is the day set for boys to take Over the conduct of the city government, and they will be in charge of the various offices fromfour oclock this afternoon until seven oclock this evening; during which time it would be well for all citizens to watch their step and behave with due decorum, or otherwise no one can tell what may happen to them.
