That cancer is in some cases and may be in all cases dye to irrita-- . tipn set up ty parasites of rmc-roscOpic size, the iritation act V ing upon an organ or organs unable to Withstand it because ot .inherited or acquired weakness is the judgment of Dr. Erwin F. 'Smith, chief plant pa hologist of the U. S. Department of AgrP culture and otthe American Association for Cancer Research. His opinion isjthe result of a present konwledge ,of cancer. t Dr. Smith attracted great from students of tl e cancer problem a few years ago when Tie" demonsrated that the crown gall o,f plants, a disease closely parralleling annual and human cancers, could be exper imently transmitted from plum, .to plant by means of pure cultures of and that the sjmptoms were due to substances excreted by the parasite. Since then he has eontirf ued his work and has now become convinced that human cancers are in all probibilty due to parasitic infection, even though no parasite causing human cancer has as yet been found. Dr. Smith also calls attention to a long series of experiments by others, shewing that cancers can be produced experimentally in animals in seveial ways anrl that one of the most important of these ways' is the means ot parasitic infection. Cancers in fowls have been show'n to bs but not only transplantable but the liquid expressed from the ground tumor contains a virus which will cause cancers when injected, and this .virus pent" in cells killed by heat, cold, 'll1 drying. Cancers in the stomach of rats and m arious organs ol frogs have been found to be closely associated with parasitic nematodes, which are microThe rat scopic worms. pass the first part of their life cy cle in the muscles of cock roaches, the fiog parasites in angleworms. The animals m eating cockroaches or the angleworms become infected w.th these nematodes, and frequently cancerous growths ensue Another cancer m rats, sarcoma of the liver, is due to the larval stage of a tape worm of the cat. Finally, cancers have been produced in mice by painting the body with irritating substances such as coal tar. Whatever we may thnb ot the cause of human cancer, says Dr. Smith, It cannot be denied that these exferimehts have 'so much adaneed our know legde and jmve so simplified the problem that we may hope for its full solution, so tar as regards many forms of cancer, in the not distant futuie. 1 , believe that the bulk of the e' dence points to microparasites as the probable cause of sarcomas and carcinomas. Opposed to this view is the fact that no one has isolated any microparasite; hut these these negat t s do not disurb me because-thparasites of of malaria and ot yellow fever remained undiscoiered for many years. The fact that human cancer does not appear to be Contagious should not bulk very largely against this view. Malaria is not directly transmitted from to person and yet it is due to a parasite. Human carcinoma may perhaps require an intermediate host and it almost certainly requires for its growth a defective bodily condition, either a bad inheritance or a king continued bad environment, or both acting together.' Referring to the experiments with rats which snowed marked inherited tendency to cancer, but only if the exciting parante were present, Dr. Smith said : A long continued physiolog- ically wrong course cf Lving, ex . cessne eatmj' or drinking, or chewing cr smoking, might also be regarded as fieparing a suitable soil for cancer but hardlv ricas HomeShoePolish par-sit- e pel-so- es tub-bill- s, n For Infanti, Jiwahdt A Children The Original Food Prink far AH Age. Finally, Dr. Smith makes a plea for more money for cancer research : "It is unfortuate that so little money should be available. The Logan High In writing and having published and distributed a small booklet called Everyday Manners for High School Students, the English classes of the Logan High School have done one ol the rrtost worthwhile and distinctive things one will encounter m a long while. This book- let, according to Miss Della orre! I,? Students submitted written work having to do with good manners of which the best was chosen for the booklet. This booklet opens whh a foreword, a quotation from Harriet Lane, and a brief statement from the English classes reading: This little book aims to help boys and girls acquire, gracious manners that give to everyday acta charm and pleasure.
