Show 4 THE FAGE TWO TRI-WEEKL- JOURNAL, LOGAN, UTAlI Y Saturday, August C" 16, 1913 ik Says The Progressive The Impeachment of Sulzer It Iooksbld for Governor Sulzer of New York, who has been impeached by the legislature of the state, for misapplying campaign funds and then swrearing falsely as to his campaign expenditures, If is alleged that he took some of the money that was contributed for the purpose of electing him and dabbled in stocks on the New York exchange. Just how much truth therfc may bJ iff the icHarge is hard to determine in advance of the trial but the. Governors prospects' are not what one might call bright. A good many people are disposed to believe the charges true because they have been made' and pressed home by members of the Governors own party, the Democrat! in the legislature being the ones that are demanding his remoV-a- ! from office. However, in this connection it will be well to reraember that most of, the Democratic members owe some sort of allegiance to Tammany Hall, and that Tamriany and the Governor have been at outs foF some time past.' .The organization which Charles Murphy leads contributed largely to Sulzers election, but as soon as the latter took office, he announced his independence of Tammany, and denounced it and its leaders in rather plain' language. Murphy has been after Sulzers head ever since and it looks as if he may get it. Murphy would not stop at anything to get Sulzer out of office, it is said, and there is a possibility of course that he has made the rod that seems to be in pickle for the Governor out of material that is all his own. One disgusting feature of the whole thing is the attempt to drag the name o the Governors wife into the affair in order that he may profit by it. There are many men inoffice'who would refuse to be placed in hiding behind the skirts of a womafi, and fairness and the past record of the Executive suggest the thought that Governor Sulzer was in no way identified with the plan of shouldering the blame upon his spouse. -- The Real Reason Why r f - t.,"' - fc.J ? Huile-Argeriti- rie Drgadrfought Biggest Battleship In World "f a Mr. Wallace seems to be delaying his until he can fill oat his roster with candidates who are not branded Democrat in front and Republican in the rear. So far he seems to have found one or two who comply with spec!, fications. It is doubtful if enough candidates of this type to fill out the list can be found in Utah. While Mr. Wallace is waiting for a new crop of Democrats to arrive at voting age, the rank and file of the party .are becoming impatient. They talk everything from recall to dynamite. He is getting plenty of opposition from the chief Republican organ of the state, and that fact alone should bring every Democrat in Utah to his support. Any Democrat who becomes a target. for the mud battery of Smoots sheet, is pretty sure to be following the line of his political duty quite closely, and n has been devoting a of late the lot of .its space to abuse of Mr, Wallace. The Judge has a lot of very warm friends here and it is but the truth, to say that his reeent utterance disappointed them. n, peace-promoti- o , Ever since the Smoot Enlarged Homestead act was passed, there has been a queAion as to whether an entryman could prove up on his land if water was found beneath the surface of it and was pumped to the top, the .theory being that the land eligible to entry under that law must be dry. In some places where men filed on land, water was afterwards discovered a short distance below the surface and was pumped out and used for irrigating small tracts, and some contended that this vitiated the filing. Finally Lewis A. Merrill, agricultural expert for the San Pedro railway, submit? ted the matter to Senator Smoot and asked for an opinion. The Utah Senator replied that he has asked the Secretary of the Interior for, a Ruling and then enelosed a copy of the order made. The Secretary holds that if a man enters land iir good faitR and then discovers water under it afterward, his filing will not be1 disturbed.- - Of course nd that-- 1 h e water w as there and intended at that time to use if h eknewwhen- - fili a gupou-thel- a wise not.
