What could be more crushthe ing, more grimly witty, than on reply attributed to Tallyrand notorcertain a when an occasion ious personage, ill and in great pain, said that he was suffering the torments of the lost. Swiftly Deja come the wicked retort ? already Of a different complexion, but equally exemplifying the soul of wit, was the reply, which has been attributed to various painters, to a questioner who wished to know the vehicle with which the painter mixed his colors. Dr. John Brown tells the story of Opie, Pray, Mr. Opie, may I ask what said you mix your colors with? the to student a brisk dilettante great painter. With brains, sir, was the gruff reply and ' the right one. Single word replies, more or less witty, says the London Globe, are fairly common . A patient whom the famous Dr. Abernethy had advised to take a walk on an empty stomach calmly replied; Whose? A recent example was the answer of the late Dean Hole to a boring Cockney fellow traveler on the Great Northern railway. What conies after Itchint asked the bore. Scratchin, same the swift report, and thereafter the conversation flagged. Many brief and telling replies are laid io the account of Dougas JerroU. It will suffice to recall Whats going on? sael a bore, stopping Jerrold In the Wit is by no means on inevitable ingredient in proverbs. Many of them are of doubtful sense, and some are foolish, yet there is a certain spice. The definition of proverbs by Howell is Sayings which combine sense, shortness and salt, is iu thfe main true. Though truth may be altogether absent and wit barely perceptible, yet there must be a certain salt which gives life and savor to the saving. ilt would b difficult toJind sayings more telling than some of the shortest 6uch, for instance, as ExForewarned, forearmed, tremes meet, or the ancient Inter malleum et incudem '(Between the hammer and the anvil.) Many sayings which in English are short were briefer still in their original classic form. That the soul of wit was exemplified most strikingly among the Greeks is only what we should expect. It is curious Tb remember that our word laconic preserves the' memory of the reputation for conciseness of speech borne by the people of one part of Greece the Laconians or Spartans. When Philip of Macedon threatened them, If I enter Laeonia I will level your city to the dust, they If. made the famous reply, New York Sun. H Constipation. Brief and witty was the reply of aCatholic cleric to an opponent in argument who had declared a fool. his disbelief in purgatory. You might go farther and fare worse, was the ecclesiastics parting shot. The wit of more than one of Dr. . Johnsons crushing retorts was enhanced by breyity, but examples are too familiar to be quoted. Johnson came down like a sledgehammer on Scotland and things Scottish. Less familiar, perhaps, is the retort in which a Scotsman scored. An Englishman in Scotland was abusing the country, complaining of the state of the larder and wondering where he could get less to pat. I could tell ye a place whaur ye wad get less, said a Scot, who W'as listening to the tirade, Wheres that? asked the other. Oh, just wtaur an Englishmans been! said the Scotsman dl7l.v.' Walker, W. L. Willey, Vosco Logan, Utah, July 9 1907. Most Logan People Have a Weak Part And Too Often Its The Back. Nine years ago John J. Roberts of York street, Poultney, Vt., reared a shepherd dog and it became a great pet of the family, particularly of Mr. Robertss daughter. Last February it became necessary to dispose of the canine and he was given 4a a close family friend, living in another part of the village, who promised to care for him until death. The dog apparently realized that he fas not wanted longer at the Roberts home, for when he saw his old master on the street he hung his head and looked the other way. In the meantime Mr. Roberts moved from York to De. pot street. Afcout a week ago Miss Roberts, the young woman who had been so fond of the shepherd, became mortally ill, and at 1 oclock in the afternoon she sank into a stupor. A few minutes- pa?t 1 the dog apeared at the house, whined at the door, and on being admitted, trotted straight to Miss Robertss room. As he was not allowed to enter he lay down at her threshold. Three times he was gently led away, hut three times he returned and was sticking to his post when the end came at 4 oclock. Until the day of the funeraal nothing more was seen of the dog, but Che procession had hardly started before he was observed coming from under the stoop, ne - k' APOUTECTS Everyone has & weak spot.
